Do Best-Of Listicles Get You Cited by AI?

Best-of listicles get you cited by AI more than any other content format. In a study of over 1 million AI citations, listicles took 21.9% of them, the largest share of any format. On shopping-style queries, that share jumps past 40%. Third-party lists win most often, but your own lists count too.

Listicles Take the Biggest Share of AI Citations

Listicles take the biggest share of AI citations of any content format. Wix’s AI Search Lab analyzed 75,000 AI answers holding over 1 million citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Perplexity. Listicles earned 21.9% of all citations, ahead of articles at 16.7% and product pages at 13.7%.

When a buyer asks an AI “which one should I get,” a ranked list is usually the answer it reaches for. That matches what I found when I broke down how ChatGPT chooses which sites to cite: the model wants sources shaped like the answer.

The gap gets wider when money enters the question. On commercial queries like “best heated socks for hunting,” listicles peaked at 40.86% of citations in the Wix study. Articles dominate informational queries instead, at 45.48%.

One more finding worth sitting with: query intent predicted which content type got cited better than the industry did, and better than which AI model was answering. The question shape decides the source shape. If your category’s buyers ask “best” questions, lists are the currency.

Why AI Models Reach for Ranked Lists

AI models reach for ranked lists because a list is a pre-built answer. When someone asks for the best option in a category, a listicle already holds the picks, the criteria, and the tradeoffs. The model just compresses it instead of assembling an answer from ten scattered pages.

This shows up hardest in shopping answers, where the list format mirrors the buying decision itself. It is a big part of how to get ChatGPT to recommend your products: the model compares options on the same criteria a good list already uses.

Platform habits differ, though. Profound tracked 680 million citations from August 2024 to June 2025 and found ChatGPT leans on established knowledge bases and media, Perplexity leans on community discussion, and Google AI Overviews sits in between. A clean list travels well on all three, but it competes with Reddit threads on Perplexity and big publishers on ChatGPT.

There is also a structural reason lists win. A numbered list with clear subheadings is easy to chunk, quote, and rank against other lists. When three listicles agree that a product belongs in the top five, the model reads that as consensus, and consensus is what it repeats.

Third-Party Lists Beat Your Own List

Third-party lists beat your own list in the citation data, and it is not close. In the same Wix dataset, 80.9% of citations went to neutral third-party sites and only 19.1% to self-promotional content. AI models treat someone else’s best-of roundup as more trustworthy than yours.

Get your brand into other people’s lists before you polish your own. The mention in the list is the asset, and the link is a bonus, which is the same logic I laid out in brand mentions vs backlinks for AI visibility.

In practice that means pitching the publishers and niche sites that already rank for “best [your category]” and giving them a real reason to include you. 5W’s State of AI Citations report found earned media placement correlates strongly with AI visibility, with sites like Forbes and Medium gaining citation share through late 2025.

The pitch itself does not need to be fancy. Find the five lists that already exist for your category, note who is on them, and offer the writer something concrete: a review unit, real performance data, or a customer stat they cannot get elsewhere. Most stores never ask, so the ones that do get in.

Write the List AI Wants to Quote

To write a list AI wants to quote, make every pick specific and every claim checkable. Name the product, state who it is best for, give the price, and say why it beat the alternatives. Vague roundups with ten interchangeable blurbs get skipped.

And yes, write your own lists too. Self-promotional content still earned roughly one in five citations, which is a lot of answers to leave on the table. Your own site is the one place you control the criteria, the freshness, and the depth.

A few rules I follow on client listicles:

  • Put the number in the title and the top pick in the first paragraph
  • Use one clear criterion per pick (“best for wide feet”), not five soft ones
  • Keep prices and availability current, since stale lists rotate out of answers
  • Include picks you do not sell, because a fair list reads as third-party

Then maintain it. A best-of list is a living page, not a publish-and-forget post. Re-check picks each season, swap out discontinued products, and update the year references, because stale lists are the first ones the models rotate out.

An honest list with real criteria beats a self-serving list every time a model reads both. Then confirm it is working. I run the same monthly checks I use to track brand mentions on ChatGPT and note which lists get pulled into answers.

Want Your Brand in the Lists AI Reads?

Listicles are the most cited format in AI answers, third-party lists carry more weight than your own, and specific, honest picks are what earn the citation. That is a content plan you can start this week.

If you want help building it, book a call and I’ll map the exact best-of queries in your category, who AI cites for them today, and the shortest path to getting your store into those answers. If you want the ongoing work handled, that is what my AI search services are for.
