Can You Advertise on ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

Yes, you can advertise on ChatGPT and in Google AI Overviews. ChatGPT ads are now self-serve through an Ads Manager in 63 countries, and Google places Search and Shopping ads above, below, and inside AI Overviews. What you can’t buy is the answer itself, since OpenAI says ads do not influence what ChatGPT says.

Key Points

  • ChatGPT ads went from a limited test in February 2026 to a self-serve Ads Manager and a Shopify app by September.
  • Only logged-in adults on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans see ads. Plus, Pro, and Business users do not.
  • Google serves ads around and inside AI Overviews from campaigns you already run, and you can’t target those slots or opt out of them.
  • Microsoft Copilot opts every eligible campaign in automatically.
  • No platform sells a spot inside the answer, so citations still have to be earned.

Can You Advertise on ChatGPT?

Yes, you can advertise on ChatGPT today through OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager, which is open to businesses billed in any of 63 countries. OpenAI started testing ads in ChatGPT in February 2026 and opened a beta Ads Manager to companies of all sizes that May.

That pace caught a lot of store owners off guard. In February this was a limited test in the US, and by fall a Shopify merchant could install an app and launch a campaign in an afternoon.

Just know that ads are a separate thing from the product results ChatGPT shows when someone shops, and those stay unpaid. I cover that side in my guide to ChatGPT shopping for Shopify stores.

Who Sees ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT ads show to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI does not show ads to users on Plus, Pro, or any Business plan, and accounts it identifies as under 18 are excluded too.

So your ad reaches the largest group of ChatGPT users and skips the ones who pay. OpenAI also says its safeguards keep ads away from sensitive conversations like health and politics.

What Does a ChatGPT Ad Look Like?

A ChatGPT ad is a card labeled as sponsored that appears below ChatGPT’s response. OpenAI’s ads basics page lists the parts: an advertiser name, a logo, a headline, a line of copy, an image, and a landing page.

On top of that standard format, OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents with select US advertisers, where a shopper can choose to start a clearly labeled chat with a brand’s own agent. I would treat that as something to watch, not something to plan a quarter around.

How to Set Up ChatGPT Ads on a Shopify Store

Setting up ChatGPT ads on a Shopify store runs through the ChatGPT Ads app in the Shopify App Store. OpenAI announced the app on September 16, 2026 for US merchants, with the other ChatGPT Ads markets following on September 23.

The setup itself is short:

  1. Create an Ads Manager account at ads.openai.com, using a business that is billed in a supported country.
  2. Install the ChatGPT Ads app from the Shopify App Store and connect your store.
  3. Pick a goal for the campaign: views, clicks, or conversions.
  4. Write context hints, which are short descriptions of the conversations and topics where your product fits.
  5. Set your bid. OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum of $3 to $5 per click.
  6. Add the creative: headline, copy, image, and landing page.
  7. Turn on conversion measurement before you spend a dollar, and tag your landing pages with UTMs.

Of those steps, the context hints are where most people go wrong. Store owners paste in their Google keyword list, and OpenAI says outright that hints are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery. Describe the conversation, not the keyword: “someone comparing heated vests for winter job sites” will do more than “heated vest.”

One more thing before you launch. A paid card sits under an answer that may already recommend someone else, so fixing the product data that earns the unpaid mention still comes first. I walk through that in how to get ChatGPT to recommend your products.

What Do ChatGPT Ads Cost?

ChatGPT ads cost whatever the auction sets, and OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click. The system is a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, so a more relevant ad can win at a lower bid.

Beyond that starting bid, OpenAI publishes no minimum spend, and I have not seen a benchmark for click-through or conversion rate that I trust yet. Nearly every number floating around comes from a vendor with something to sell. So budget it as a test: a fixed amount, a fixed window, and a result you compare against your own Google Search campaigns.

What Reporting Do You Get?

ChatGPT ads reporting covers impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions inside Ads Manager. You never see the conversations themselves, since OpenAI says advertisers only receive aggregate information about how their ads perform.

Also, use your own numbers as the tiebreaker. Tag every ad with UTMs so Shopify and GA4 show those sessions and orders next to every other channel. I trust that view more than any ad platform grading its own homework.

Where Does Google Sell Ads in AI Answers?

Google sells ads above, below, and within AI Overviews, and it is testing new formats for AI Mode. Its Google Ads documentation says ads can show above or below AI Overviews in all 200+ markets, while ads inside the overview run in English in 12 countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, and India.

Ads in AI Overviews

Ads in AI Overviews come from campaigns you already run: Google pulls Text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns. It matches them using both the shopper’s query and the content of the overview.

The problem is control. Google’s answers in its own FAQ are flat: you can’t target AI Overview placements, you can’t opt out of them, and there is no segmented reporting when your ad shows inside one. Those ads just get counted as Top Ads.

So if you run Shopping or Performance Max, you are probably an AI Overviews advertiser already. The spend logic is the one I walk through in does Google Ads help SEO, moved into a new box on the page.

Ads in AI Mode

Ads in AI Mode are still in testing as of fall 2026. In May, Google announced two formats built with Gemini, Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, and said it was expanding its Direct Offers pilot.

Even so, the prep Google hands advertisers is familiar. It points you to Performance Max and AI Max, and it says the new formats will stay clearly labeled as “Sponsored.” There is no AI Mode campaign type to build.

Microsoft Copilot Serves Your Ads Automatically

Microsoft Copilot serves your ads automatically: every eligible Microsoft Advertising campaign is opted in, and there is no way out. Microsoft’s Copilot ads documentation says “Advertisers cannot opt out of serving ads,” and it does not support specific metrics for the ads that serve there.

Still, one control carries over. Negative keywords apply in Copilot the same way they do in web search, so a clean negative list is the lever you keep. If you run Microsoft Shopping campaigns for your store, your product ads are eligible for Copilot whether you asked for that or not.

AI Ad Platforms Side by Side

ChatGPT is the only one of these AI ad platforms where you choose the placement on purpose. Google and Microsoft fold AI slots into campaigns you already run, with no opt-out and no separate reporting.

Can You Pay to Be in the AI Answer?

No, you cannot pay to be in the AI answer on ChatGPT, Google, or Copilot. OpenAI’s ad announcement says “Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you,” and its ads are always labeled as sponsored and kept visually separate from the organic answer.

Google words its promise differently, and I would read it closely. It says ads in AI answers stay labeled as “Sponsored,” but its own documentation says the content of the AI Overview helps decide which ad shows. The answer is not for sale, and the ad next to it is picked to match.

So be skeptical of any vendor selling “guaranteed AI citations.” Nobody sells placement inside the answer, because no platform has built a way to sell it. The models pick sources based on what they can crawl and trust, and I break that down in how ChatGPT picks its sources.

That wall has a business reason behind it too. These platforms compete on trust, and an answer that turns out to be bought is the fastest way to lose a user for good.

Are AI Ads Worth It for Your Store?

AI ads are worth a small test for a store whose Google Search or Shopping ads already turn a profit. ChatGPT gives you conversion tracking and a bid you control, so you can judge it on the same profit math, while Google and Copilot give you no separate numbers to judge at all.

But if your search ads lose money today, AI placements will not fix that. A weak offer does not get stronger under a chat window.

I would also skip the test if you can’t measure it. Without conversion tracking turned on, you end up judging by clicks, and clicks from a chat window tell you very little about orders.

For the checks themselves, this is the list I would run:

  • Watch Top Ads performance in Google Ads, since ads inside AI Overviews report there.
  • Compare conversion rate on broad match and Performance Max before and after AI placements reached your market.
  • Keep negative keywords tight, since they still apply in Copilot.
  • Cap a ChatGPT test at an amount you would be fine losing, and run it for 30 days.

Whatever those checks show, the oldest rule in paid still applies. Rented traffic stops the day the spend stops, and I show what that looks like in what happens when you turn off ads. Treat AI ad slots as an extension of search ads, not a new channel.

Questions Store Owners Ask About AI Ads

Do Paid ChatGPT Subscribers See Ads?

No, paid ChatGPT subscribers on Plus, Pro, and Business plans do not see ads. That shapes who you can reach: if your buyers are heavy ChatGPT users who pay for it, your ad may never get in front of them.

For those shoppers, the organic answer is the only way in. That is one more reason I would not treat ads as a replacement for being recommended.

Will Buying Ads Help You Get Cited?

No, buying ads will not help you get cited in AI answers. OpenAI keeps ads and answers separate, and nothing in Google’s documentation ties ad spend to the links inside an AI Overview.

Even so, earned citations are worth chasing on their own. Visitors who arrive from them tend to buy, and I cover those numbers in do AI citations convert into customers.

Can Stores Outside the US Advertise on ChatGPT?

Yes, stores outside the US can advertise on ChatGPT if the business being billed is based in one of the 63 supported countries. That list includes the UK, Canada, Australia, most of Europe, India, Japan, and Brazil.

Just know the rule is about the legal entity. OpenAI says the entity that advertises and gets billed must be based in an available country.

Earn the Citation Before You Rent the Slot

Earning the citation before you rent the slot is the better order for most stores. A ChatGPT ad appears below the response, so the brands named in the answer get read before any sponsor does.

The earned path costs time in place of budget, and I put numbers on it in how much AEO costs. Opening your site to the right crawlers takes an afternoon. Rewriting your top pages to answer first takes a few weeks, and getting named on the lists and review sites the models pull from takes months.

That slower work is what my AI search services for Shopify stores cover, and it pairs fine with a paid test. Spend on ads for this quarter and earn citations for next year. None of the earned work stops when a campaign ends, and no competitor can outbid you for it.

Want to Show Up Without Renting the Slot?

You can rent space next to AI answers on every major platform now, and none of them will sell you the answer itself. If you want to know where your brand stands in those answers today, book a call and I’ll show you which buying questions already name you, which name your competitors, and the three earned moves I’d make first. When you want the ongoing work handled, my AI search services pick up from there.
