Does AI Search Kill Organic Traffic?
AI search kills clicks on informational queries, but it does not kill the organic traffic that drives sales. Pew found people click a result on 8% of searches with an AI summary versus 15% without one. Buying-intent queries still send clicks, and the visitors AI does send convert far better.
Key Points
- Pew Research: searches with an AI summary got a click on 8% of visits, versus 15% without one.
- Ahrefs measured a 34.5% lower click-through rate for the top result when an AI Overview appears.
- Seer Interactive tracked organic CTR falling 61% on queries where AI Overviews show.
- Semrush data pegs AI search visitors at 4.4x the value of traditional organic visitors.
- The move is shifting effort toward buying-intent pages and getting cited inside AI answers.
How Much Traffic Do AI Overviews Actually Take?
AI Overviews take roughly a third to half of the clicks on queries where they appear. Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords and found the top result loses 34.5% of its expected clicks when an AI Overview shows up. Pew tracked 900 real people and watched clicks fall from 15% of searches to 8%.
The details are rougher than the headlines. In the Ahrefs study, position 1 CTR on affected keywords dropped from 7.3% to 2.6% in one year. In the Pew data, people clicked a source link inside the AI summary on just 1% of visits, and they ended their browsing session entirely after 26% of pages with an AI summary.
| Study | Sample | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Pew Research | 68,879 real searches | Clicks fell from 15% to 8% with AI summaries |
| Ahrefs | 300,000 keywords | 34.5% lower CTR for the top result |
| Seer Interactive | 3,119 tracked queries | Organic CTR down 61% where AI Overviews show |
Which Queries Lose Clicks and Which Keep Them?
Informational queries lose the most clicks, while buying-intent queries hold up far better. Pew saw an AI summary on about one in five searches, and Seer’s data shows educational questions are exactly where those summaries land. Nobody completes a checkout inside an AI Overview yet. Zoom out and the engine serving those summaries keeps growing, which is why AI search is not about to replace Google.
Think about your own store. A post like “how to clean leather boots” now gets answered on the results page. But “best leather boots for wide feet” still shows products, reviews, and comparisons people click through, because they want to see the boots before spending $200.
This is why I push clients to chase keywords that drive sales instead of raw traffic. Judge your SEO by revenue per query, not by total clicks. A blog that loses 40% of its how-to traffic can still grow sales if the money pages hold their ground, which is the real test of whether blogging is worth it for a Shopify store.
Is Google Right That Clicks Are Just Higher Quality Now?
Google claims total organic clicks are stable and quality is up, and the truth sits somewhere in the middle. In August 2025, Search head Liz Reid wrote that click volume is “relatively stable” year over year and that quality clicks, where users do not bounce right back, are slightly up.
Google published no numbers with that post, and every independent study above points down on informational queries. I will give Google partial credit anyway. In my clients’ Search Console accounts, clicks are down but conversions from organic hold steady, which matches the quality-clicks story more than the doom story.
Being the brand inside the answer also softens the blow. Seer found that brands cited in AI Overviews earned 35% higher organic CTR than uncited brands on the same queries. Getting into the answer box is now part of the job, and my guide to ranking in AI Overviews covers how.
Do AI Referrals Make Up the Difference?
AI referrals do not replace lost clicks in volume yet, but they punch far above their weight in value, and you can watch yours by tracking AI traffic in GA4. Semrush’s clickstream research shows ChatGPT referral traffic grew 206% from January 2025 to January 2026, spreading across roughly 170,000 domains, up from 71,000 a year earlier.
Value is a different story. A Semrush study of 500 topics found AI search visitors are worth 4.4x a traditional organic visitor, because they arrive pre-sold, the way a friend’s recommendation arrives pre-sold. My ecommerce clients see the same shape: small AI referral numbers, outsized conversion rates.
Fifty visitors who already trust you beat five hundred who skimmed a summary. Track AI referrals separately in your analytics, and treat AI citations for your products as a channel you build on purpose, not a fluke.
What Should You Change in Your SEO Plan?
You should change the mix in your SEO plan, not the mission, because organic search still works but the clicks now come from different pages. Organic search still works, but the weight has to move from top-of-funnel blog traffic toward pages that catch buyers and content that gets cited by AI. I am an SEO consultant, so weigh my bias, but this reallocation is what the click data demands.
Here is the order I run for stores:
- Open GSC and flag informational posts losing clicks while impressions hold. That gap is AI answering you on the results page.
- Shift that writing budget into bottom-of-funnel content, comparisons, and buying guides that AI cannot close.
- Tighten collection and product pages, since buying queries still send clicks.
- Earn brand mentions in reviews, forums, and press so AI answers cite you.
Through all four steps, keep publishing, but make every new page one an AI answer cannot replace.
Want Traffic That Survives AI Search?
Clicks on informational queries are not coming back, and pretending otherwise wastes a year. Stores that shift toward buying-intent pages, AI citations, and brand demand are growing revenue right through this shakeout. The traffic mix changed, the opportunity did not.
If you want a plan for your store, book a call and I will pull your Search Console data live, show you exactly which of your queries AI is eating, and map where your next 90 days of content effort should go. If you would rather have it done for you, that is what my AI search services cover.
