How to Increase Branded Search for Your Shopify Store
You increase branded search for your Shopify store by putting your name in front of buyers off Google. Nobody searches a brand they have never met, and creators, packaging, and a category you own are what make them type it. Measure it first in Search Console. Then pick two channels and hold them for six months.
Short answer: baseline your branded clicks in Search Console, run two off-Google channels for six months (creators plus packaging for most stores), and judge the work by whether the branded line moves.
What You Need
- Search Console access for the top-level property, since the branded filter only works there.
- Google Trends and a list of three to five direct competitors.
- Your post-purchase email flow, so you can add the review and share requests.
- A short list of creators who already use products like yours.
- A budget line for packaging that people will want to photograph.
Step 1: Baseline Your Branded Clicks in Search Console
Baselining your branded clicks in Search Console comes first: you cannot grow a number you have never written down, and Google now splits the number for you. The branded queries filter launched in November 2025 and reached every eligible site in March 2026. It uses an AI-assisted classifier, not a keyword list, so it catches misspellings and product names that do not contain your brand.
So open the Performance report, apply the Branded view, and note three numbers for the last three months: branded clicks, branded impressions, and branded share of total clicks. The Insights report adds a card with the same split. Write them in a sheet with the date, because the whole rest of this post is a plan to move those three lines.
Also, look at what those branded clicks are worth before you decide the work is not urgent. Wolfgang Digital’s ecommerce KPI report measured branded search at a 47 to 1 return, against 10 to 1 for Google Search overall and 2.3 to 1 once brand terms are removed. Brand clicks are the cheapest clicks you can get and the best converting ones, which is why they belong at the top of any list of quick wins in Search Console.
Step 2: Track Share of Search Against Competitors
Tracking share of search against competitors is the second step. Your own branded line can rise while the category grows faster and you lose ground, and share of search catches that. The IPA’s share of search research found search share explains about 83% of a brand’s market share on average, across 30 case studies in 12 categories and seven countries. It is the closest thing to a leading indicator a small store can get without paying for panel data.
The method for that is Google Trends and a calculator. Compare your brand against three to five direct competitors, export the interest data, and divide your brand’s interest by the group total. That percentage is your share of search. Track it quarterly and put it next to the Search Console numbers from Step 1.
When you set up the comparison, pick the Topic version of each brand where Trends offers one, since the plain search term misses spelling variants, and set the range to the last five years so seasonal peaks do not fool you. A brand that spikes every November and flatlines the rest of the year is not growing, and the five-year view shows that in one glance.
| Metric | Where it lives | How often to check |
|---|---|---|
| Branded clicks and impressions | Search Console, Branded filter | Monthly |
| Branded share of total clicks | Search Console, Insights card | Monthly |
| Share of search vs competitors | Google Trends export | Quarterly |
| Attributed branded searches | Google Ads, YouTube campaigns | Per campaign |
Those are two numbers and one habit. Branded share of your own clicks tells you whether demand for you is growing, and share of search tells you whether it is growing faster than the competition. This is the first report I set up for every store in my Shopify SEO services, before a single page gets touched.
Step 3: Own Your Brand Results Page
Owning your brand results page comes before any demand work, since every branded search you earn is wasted if a reseller, a coupon site, or a marketplace listing takes the click. Search your brand name, your brand plus “reviews,” and your brand plus “discount code,” and screenshot page one. Your homepage should hold the top spot with product, review, and policy pages under it.
If a coupon site ranks for your brand plus “discount code,” build that page yourself: a plain page that says which discounts you run and when. If a marketplace listing outranks your product page, the fix is usually a better title on your own page and links to it from the homepage and the menu. Both fixes take an afternoon, and they close the leak before you spend a dollar making the leak bigger.
Just know that this step is the reason branded search sits near the top of my list of ways to get Shopify sales without ads. The click is already yours. The work is making sure nobody else is standing in front of the door.
Step 4: Put Creators on YouTube and TikTok
Putting creators on YouTube and TikTok is the fastest way to manufacture branded searches. Google’s own research found about 40% of 18 to 24 year olds start looking for things on TikTok or Instagram instead of Google Search or Maps. Those shoppers still buy on Google. They just learn the name somewhere else first.
So start with creators who already use products like yours, give them the product and a code, and ask for one honest video, not a script. A ten-minute review that says your brand name out loud four times teaches a viewer exactly what to type, and the video keeps sending searches for years after the post date. The same video becomes a source AI models read, which is a large part of why ChatGPT recommends some brands and skips others in the same category.
Google now measures this directly. Attributed Branded Searches counts the branded searches that came from people who saw a YouTube ad, with cost per branded search and vertical benchmarks, and Google plans to extend it to Display and AI Mode. If you run any paid video, that column tells you which creative makes people type your name.
Even without ads, you can read the same signal by hand. Give each creator a unique code, then compare branded impressions in Search Console for the two weeks after each video goes live against the two weeks before. The creator whose video lifts branded impressions is the one to book again, and the one whose code gets used but whose video moves nothing is selling a discount, not your name.
Step 5: Make the Box Worth Posting
Making the box worth posting turns every order into a branded search for someone else. Dotcom Distribution’s packaging survey found almost 40% of online shoppers have shared a photo or video of a product they received, and shoppers were 1.5 times more likely to share a gift-like box than a plain brown one. The same survey found 54% used social media photos to research a purchase, and 61% of those said the photos convinced them to buy.
So print the brand name on the inside of the lid, where the photo gets taken. Add a card that asks for the photo and gives the handle to tag. Keep the outer box plain if theft is a concern, but the moment the lid opens, the name should be the first thing in the frame.
The unboxing is a branded search ad you only pay for once. A card and a printed lid cost cents per order, and the photo it produces lands in front of the exact people most likely to type your name next week.
Step 6: Name a Category You Can Own
Naming a category you can own is the slowest step and the one with the biggest ceiling. A brand that leads a category gets searched by name every time the category comes up. Fieldsheer built a hub around “heated clothes for women,” ranked first for “best heated jackets for women” within two weeks, and was then named Best Overall by Travel + Leisure and the number one pick by ChatGPT. Each of those mentions produced typed searches for the brand, not the category.
The reason this works is that mentions matter more than links now. Ahrefs correlated AI visibility across 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions scored 0.664 and branded search volume 0.392, far ahead of backlinks at 0.218. The signals that grow branded search are the same ones AI systems weigh, and I go deeper on that in brand mentions vs backlinks.
When you pick the category, use autosuggest, not ambition. Type your product type into Google, stop, and read the list. The narrowest phrase you can honestly lead is the one to build the hub around, and every collection, guide, and creator brief points at it until the press and the models start using your name in the same sentence.
Step 7: Keep Your Name in Front of Past Buyers
Keeping your name in front of past buyers is the cheapest step, and a customer who bought once already knows what to type, and repeat exposure is what turns “that vest brand” into a typed search. Your post-purchase flow, a monthly email people want to open, and a community or SMS list all do the same job: they keep the name on the screen between orders.
Beyond that, put the brand name in the subject line and the sender name, not only the logo. Half of email gets read on a phone with images off, and a sender name that reads “Team” or a first name alone teaches the buyer nothing. The name they see twelve times a year is the name they search. Every email is a branded search rehearsal, so make the name the thing they remember from it.
One more thing: add a “search us on Google” nudge to the packaging card and the warranty email for marketplace buyers. A buyer who found you on Amazon has never typed your name, and one line on the card is what moves the second order to your own site.
What to Do If the Branded Line Does Not Move
How long before branded search rises?
Branded search rises within three to six months of steady creator and packaging work. The IPA data shows search share leads market share by months, not weeks, and Search Console shows it weekly once it starts. If nothing moves by month six, the channel is wrong for your buyer, not the tactic. Check where your last 50 customers heard about you and move the effort there.
Does branded search count if people search my product name, not my brand?
Yes, branded search counts product-name searches. Google’s classifier includes queries that refer to a unique product or service of the site even when the brand name is absent. A store whose hero product is better known than the store benefits from the same rule. Just make sure the product page, not a reseller, is what ranks for it.

Make Your Name the Keyword
Increasing branded search for a Shopify store comes down to measured basics: baseline it in Search Console, pick the two off-Google channels your buyers actually watch, and stay consistent until the typed searches follow. The payoff is 47 to 1 conversion, a leading indicator of market share, and a brand AI models can verify. It is the slowest channel and the safest one.
I help Shopify brands stop renting their customers from Meta and Google by building search and AI visibility that keeps sending buyers after the ads turn off. Book a call and I will pull your branded and non-branded split from Search Console and show you which of the seven steps your store is missing. If you want the whole plan run for you, that is what my Shopify SEO services include.
