How Does ChatGPT Choose Which Sites to Cite?

ChatGPT chooses which sites to cite by running a web search, leaning heavily on Bing’s index, then quoting the pages that answer the prompt most directly. Seer Interactive matched 87% of ChatGPT search citations to Bing’s top 20 results. Brand mentions across the web decide who makes that shortlist.

Once you see the pipeline, getting your store cited stops feeling like luck and starts looking like a checklist.

Where Does ChatGPT Get Its Search Results?

ChatGPT gets its search results from partner search indexes, and Bing does most of the heavy lifting there. When Seer Interactive tested 100 real queries, 87% of the citations matched Bing’s top 20 organic results, while only 56% overlapped with Google, at a median rank of 17.

So the first gate is boring: rank in Bing. Most store owners have never opened Bing Webmaster Tools, and it takes an afternoon to set up. Seer also found ChatGPT rewrites long prompts into simpler search queries before it looks anything up, so the queries it actually runs look a lot like normal keywords. Notice what that gate skips entirely: you do not need to rank in Google to show up in ChatGPT.

The second gate is access. OpenAI’s crawler docs describe OAI-SearchBot as the bot that decides whether your site can appear in ChatGPT search at all, and it obeys your robots.txt file. A separate bot called ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a person asks about your store directly. Block either one and you disappear from those answers.

One more wrinkle: ChatGPT does not search the web on every prompt. Semrush’s clickstream data shows it ran a live search on about 35% of queries in early 2026. The rest come from the model’s memory of your brand, which is why the steps to rank in ChatGPT go beyond classic rankings.

Why Do Brand Mentions Beat Backlinks?

Brand mentions beat backlinks because models learn from text about you, not from link graphs. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility at 0.66, while backlinks sat at 0.22. The words around your name matter more than the links.

The same study found branded search volume correlated at 0.39 and ad spend barely registered, while 26% of the brands studied earned zero AI mentions at all. The web either talks about you or it does not, and the models notice.

Picture how a model forms an answer to “best natural deodorant for sensitive skin.” If your brand appears in Reddit threads, best-of roundups, and dermatologist blogs, the model keeps meeting you in that exact context. That repetition is consensus, and consensus is what gets retrieved and cited.

A mention with no link now does more for AI visibility than a link with no context. Most SEOs still price backlinks above mentions, and plenty will argue with me on that. I break down the tradeoff in brand mentions vs backlinks.

What Makes a Page Easy for ChatGPT to Cite?

A page is easy to cite when the answer sits in the first lines under a clear heading, in plain language a model can lift word for word. ChatGPT quotes passages, not whole pages. If your answer is buried under a 400-word warmup, the model quotes whoever put it up top instead.

That is because retrieval systems chop your page into chunks and score each chunk against the prompt on its own. That means every section of your page has to stand alone, with the claim first and the proof after. An answer that needs the three paragraphs above it to make sense never gets pulled.

So structure your pages like an outline. One question per heading, the direct answer immediately below it, details after. Ahrefs’ review of LLM search research found prompts average around 42 words, so pages built for specific long-tail questions match more retrievals than broad ones. Clean product schema gives models your prices, stock, and reviews in machine-readable form on top of that.

Freshness breaks ties. An analysis of 17 million citations found AI assistants cite content about 26% fresher than what organic search surfaces. Update your key pages quarterly, because stale pages lose citations to newer ones saying the same thing.

Can a Small Store Get Cited?

Small stores get cited every day, because citations spread across far more sites than Google’s top 10 ever did. Semrush counted about 170,000 unique domains receiving ChatGPT referral traffic by February 2026, up from 71,000 in October 2024. That pie is getting wider, not narrower.

Fair warning on the data: most hard research measures Google’s AI Overviews or ChatGPT search snapshots, and OpenAI publishes no citation algorithm. I am reading patterns, not a spec sheet.

The pattern still favors the niche. A prompt like “running belt that fits a large phone” has maybe five brands with any consensus behind them, and a focused store can own that conversation. Pick the narrow questions where you can be the obvious answer, and win those first. My playbook for small brands in AI answers starts there.

Want ChatGPT Sending Shoppers to Your Store?

ChatGPT’s picks are not random. It searches through Bing’s index, favors brands the web mentions in context, and quotes pages that answer fast and stay fresh. Every one of those levers is something a Shopify store can pull this quarter without a big budget.

If you want this handled, book a call and I will run live prompts for your product category on the call, show you who ChatGPT cites instead of you today, and give you the three fixes I would start with. And when you want the ongoing work handled, my AI search services for Shopify stores pick up from there.
