Are AI Citations Stable or Do They Churn?

AI citations are not stable, because studies that re-asked identical questions a month apart found 40 to 60% of cited domains changed, and week-to-week churn on ChatGPT search hits 74%. But most answers keep a small stable core of 1 to 5 sources, and that core is the spot worth earning.

The Churn Numbers Are Bigger Than You Think

AI citation churn runs 40% to 60% of cited domains in a single month, bigger than most people expect. Profound re-ran roughly 80,000 prompts per platform one month apart and measured how many cited domains changed. Google AI Overviews churned 59.3%, ChatGPT 54.1%, Copilot 53.4%, and Perplexity 40.5%.

Half the domains AI cites today will be gone from that answer in a month. Stretch the window to six months and the Profound data shows 70 to 90% turnover. This is why a one-time check in an AI visibility tracking tool tells you almost nothing on its own.

Monthly figures come from Profound’s June to July 2025 study. Weekly figures come from a separate 17-week SISTRIX study covered next. For context, Google runs only four or five core algorithm updates a year, so this is a different game than rank tracking.

Why so unstable? AI answers sit on top of live retrieval. The model re-searches, the underlying index shifts, the prompt wording nudges results, and the platforms keep changing their own retrieval systems. Any one of those moves the citation list, and all four move constantly.

Most Answers Keep a Stable Core of Sources

Most AI answers keep a stable core of sources even while everything around it churns. SISTRIX tracked 82,619 prompts with 1.5 million snapshots over 17 weeks and found 86.5% of prompts hold a fixed set of 1 to 5 domains that stay present for weeks and months.

The stable core is earned by being the obvious source, not the lucky one. A single mention that comes and goes is different from being cited every time, which is the distinction I drew in citations vs mentions.

The rest of the citation slots rotate at 89% per week. So an AI answer works like a talk show: a couple of permanent hosts, and a rotating cast of guests. Getting cited once means you were a guest. The SISTRIX study also found weekly churn varies wildly by platform: 5% on AI Overviews, 56% on AI Mode, 74% on ChatGPT search.

Which platform you optimize for changes the job, then. An AI Overviews citation behaves closer to a ranking you can hold. A ChatGPT citation behaves like PR coverage, worth earning and impossible to lease. Treat each channel with the strategy it deserves.

Domains Stick While Pages Swap

Domains stick while individual pages swap out underneath them. Independent research by Alex Birkett compared citation snapshots a month apart and found 65% of domains persisted but only 49% of specific URLs did. SISTRIX saw the same pattern, with URL-level churn about 15 points higher than domain-level.

In Birkett’s words, the sources AI reaches for stay largely the same, while the specific pages within them shift. Models decide they trust a site, then keep re-picking whichever page on it looks freshest and most on-target for the query.

That is good news if you run a real site and bad news if you run one lucky page. Site-level trust is the durable asset. It compounds across every page you publish, while any single URL’s citation can vanish next week.

For you, that means one great post is a foothold, not a moat. Keeping pages current matters more here than in classic SEO, which is exactly what I found when I dug into whether content freshness matters for AI citations.

Ride the Churn Instead of Fighting It

You ride AI citation churn by building breadth and judging trends, not by defending single answers. Cover your topic cluster deeply so the model has many pages of yours to rotate through, and refresh the ones that earn citations so they stay pick-worthy.

The rotation is an opportunity for smaller sites, not just a threat. Slots that reshuffle weekly are slots you can enter without outranking anyone for years first. New pages can enter answers within days, as I showed in how fast ChatGPT and AI Overviews pick up new content.

Churn also arrives in waves you cannot predict. Semrush’s 13-week citation study watched Reddit fall from close to 60% of ChatGPT responses to around 10% in roughly six weeks. If Reddit can lose that much overnight, nobody’s spot is guaranteed.

So, judge AI visibility on monthly trends, never on a single day’s screenshot. Check the same prompt set on a schedule, log who gets cited, and treat any one reading as weather, not climate. A client panicking over a lost citation on Tuesday usually has it back by the following week, and the ones who gained ground did it over quarters.

Want to Be the Source AI Keeps Coming Back To?

AI citations churn 40 to 60% a month, but a small core of sources holds steady, and domains outlast individual pages. Depth, freshness, and patience are what move you from the rotating cast into the core.

Book a call and I’ll benchmark which AI answers cite your store today, re-run them a month out, and show you exactly where your citations hold and where they churn. And when you want the ongoing work handled, my AI search services for Shopify stores pick up from there.
