Do AI Models Read Your Reviews?

AI models do read your reviews, because ChatGPT’s shopping results summarize reviews pulled from public websites and OpenAI names reviews as a factor in which products get shown. Forum threads about your brand count too. If your reviews are thin or rough, AI answers repeat that back to shoppers.

Here is where AI actually finds your reviews, and how to make them work for you instead of against you.

ChatGPT Pulls Reviews Into Shopping Answers

ChatGPT pulls reviews straight into its shopping answers, because its product results are built from review summaries as well as price. OpenAI’s own shopping documentation says product results consider “price, reviews, and ease of use,” and that the review summaries shoppers see are model-generated from “reviews from public websites.”

Two details in that doc matter for store owners. Results are not ads, so you cannot buy your way in. And OpenAI does not verify reviews or ratings, so whatever the open web says about your product is what feeds into how to get ChatGPT to recommend your products.

If a shopper can read your reviews on the open web, an AI model can too. That cuts both ways, and most stores have never checked which way it cuts for them.

You can see this yourself in about two minutes. Ask ChatGPT to compare your best seller against a competitor’s, then read the review summary it produces. The phrases it highlights, good and bad, came from real review text somewhere on the open web.

Shopping Research Reads Reviews Like a Buyer

ChatGPT’s shopping research mode reads reviews the way a careful buyer would, just faster. OpenAI launched it in November 2025 as a model trained specifically for shopping tasks. It asks clarifying questions, then researches across retail sites and returns a personal buyer’s guide.

This is the direction shopping is heading, where an agent does the comparison work before a human ever lands on your site. I covered the bigger shift in what agentic commerce means for stores.

Think about what that guide contains: top products, key differences, and tradeoffs. Every tradeoff it lists for your product is sourced from something written about it, and reviews are the biggest pile of writing most products have. Thin reviews mean the model fills that section from whatever else it can find.

OpenAI spells out where that writing comes from, saying the tool pulls “up-to-date information like price, availability, reviews, specs, and images” by reading product pages directly, while avoiding low-quality or spammy sites. Your product page and its reviews are the raw material for that guide, and reviews are one of the few inputs you can influence this month.

Reddit Threads Count as Reviews Too

Reddit threads count as reviews in the eyes of AI models, and they get read constantly. Profound analyzed about 700,000 social platform citations from ChatGPT and found Reddit is its most cited social source, with 99% of those citations pointing to individual discussion threads.

A thread titled “is [your brand] legit?” is effectively a review page you do not control. When a model summarizes your product, that thread can carry as much weight as the testimonials on your site. The difference between those formats matters on your own pages too, and I break it down in reviews vs testimonials.

Video reviews get read too, in a way. The same Profound data shows 85% of ChatGPT’s YouTube citations point to specific videos, not channels. A detailed review video of your product, with a clear title and description, is another review surface a model can find and cite.

The review thread you ignore on Reddit can outweigh the reviews on your own site. I unpacked why in how ChatGPT uses Reddit, but the short version is: show up, answer plainly, and fix the complaints people repeat.

Make Your Reviews Readable to AI

To make your reviews readable to AI, put them on pages a crawler can load without scripts or logins. Many review widgets inject reviews with JavaScript, and some crawlers never see that content. Check by viewing your product page’s source: if the review text is not in it, AI is probably not reading it.

A review a crawler cannot see is a review AI never read. If you run on Shopify, a solid review app that renders reviews in the page source does most of the technical work. Then work the basics: ask every buyer for a review, reply to the bad ones, and seed products on the third-party sites your shoppers already use.

Once a crawler can see them, recency and volume both matter. A model summarizing “common likes and dislikes” needs enough recent text to summarize, and a product with nine reviews from 2023 gives it almost nothing. Steady review flow, even a handful a month, keeps the summary current and yours to influence.

One warning while you are at it: do not fake anything. Astroturfed reviews already carry legal risk, and a model that summarizes patterns across many sites is exactly the reader most likely to notice your ratings do not match what everyone else says.

And the stakes are growing fast. Capital One Shopping’s research roundup reports 39% of consumers have used AI assistants for online shopping, and AI-driven retail traffic grew 138% year over year into 2026. The models reading your reviews are increasingly the ones making the shortlist.

Want to Know What AI Reads About Your Store?

AI models read your reviews on your site, on retailer pages, and in forum threads, then repeat what they find to shoppers who never visit you. Public, current, honest reviews are now a search asset, not just social proof.

Book a call and I’ll audit what ChatGPT and Google’s AI actually say about your products, where those claims come from, and which review gaps to close first. If you would rather have it done for you, that is what my AI search services cover.
