What Is Agentic Commerce? A Shopify Store Owner’s Guide
Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent finds, compares, and buys the product for the shopper inside a chat like ChatGPT or Gemini. It is live now: OpenAI’s Instant Checkout buys from Etsy and Shopify stores inside ChatGPT, and Google’s AI Mode checks out from US retailers through a standard Shopify helped build.
Key Points
| Piece | What it is | What it means for your store |
|---|---|---|
| The agent | ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot shopping on the customer’s behalf | The agent reads your product data, not your homepage |
| Agentic Commerce Protocol | OpenAI and Stripe’s open checkout standard | Buy-in-chat from ChatGPT, you stay merchant of record |
| Universal Commerce Protocol | Google’s open standard, built with Shopify, Etsy, Target, Walmart | Checkout inside AI Mode and the Gemini app with Google Pay |
| The traffic | Up 393% year over year in Q1 2026, converting 42% better | Small today, growing faster than any channel I track |
Agentic Commerce Is Delegated Shopping
Agentic commerce is the shopper handing the whole task to an AI agent: “find me a heated vest under $200 with good battery life” turns into two or three product cards with prices and reviews, and a buy button under the one they pick. The agent does the searching, the comparing, and now the paying, so the shopper never opens a tab. Millions of people already start shopping trips in an AI chat every day, per Shopify, and the agent is the part that finishes the trip.
That is the difference from AI search. An AI Overview or a ChatGPT answer points a shopper at your page and they click through. An agent stays in the chat and brings the store to them, which is why the mechanics of Shopify and ChatGPT shopping are worth understanding on their own.
The store, though, is still the store. Nothing about the model changes who ships the order, who processes the card, or who owns the customer. The mall moved into the chat window and your shelf is the product data you publish.
How Does an AI Agent Buy From Your Store?
An AI agent buys from your store in three moves: it discovers your product from a feed or a crawl, compares it against other options on price, availability, and reviews, and completes checkout through a protocol your platform has already wired up. You do not write code for any of the three.
Discovery runs on your product data
Discovery starts with the data the agent can read, and on Shopify that is your product catalog, synced through Shopify’s own feeds to the AI platforms you turn on. The agent knows your product exists if the title says what it is, the price and stock are current, and the specs sit in text instead of an image.
Comparison runs on the same signals search uses
Comparison works the way ranking always has: the agent weighs price, availability, ratings, and how well your product matches what was asked. OpenAI says ChatGPT’s product results are organic and unsponsored and ranked on relevance, with availability, price, and quality in the mix. Getting picked is close to the same work as getting ChatGPT to recommend your products in an answer.
Checkout runs on a protocol, not your theme
Checkout happens inside the chat through one of two open standards, with the payment credential passed to your existing checkout so no card number is ever exposed to the agent. The order lands in your Shopify admin like any other, tagged with its source, and you fulfill it the same way.
Under the hood, UCP runs a small checkout state machine: the cart starts incomplete, escalates back to you if something needs a human (an address the agent cannot resolve, a tax question), and moves to ready-for-complete once every field is filled. That escalation step is why the protocol can handle a real store’s edge cases instead of only clean single-item orders.
The Two Protocols Doing the Plumbing
Two open protocols run agentic checkout today: OpenAI and Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Protocol, which powers Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, and the Universal Commerce Protocol, which Google announced in January 2026 and co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart. You do not pick one; Shopify implements both for you.
| Detail | Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) |
|---|---|---|
| Built by | OpenAI and Stripe | Google with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart |
| Where it checks out | ChatGPT (Instant Checkout) | Google AI Mode and the Gemini app |
| Payment | Stripe shared payment token or the merchant’s own processor | Google Pay, with PayPal coming |
| Merchant of record | The store | The store |
| Backers | Open-sourced for any developer | 20+ endorsers incl. Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Stripe, Best Buy, Home Depot |
The Agentic Commerce Protocol is open source, so any platform or agent can adopt it. UCP works the same way: Shopify’s engineering team explains that a store publishes a profile at /.well-known/ucp declaring what it supports, and the agent negotiates checkout from there. Google’s launch post lists more than 20 endorsers, including Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe, so the two standards are already talking to each other.
For a Shopify store, both arrive through one switch. Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts, announced the same day as UCP, let you manage ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini from a single screen in the admin. I cover the Google side of that in Google AI Mode for Shopify stores.
Which Platforms Can Sell Your Products Today?
Three AI platforms can sell a Shopify store’s products through an agent today: ChatGPT with Instant Checkout, Microsoft Copilot with its embedded checkout, and Google’s AI Mode and Gemini app through UCP. Each one arrives through Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts, so the same catalog feeds all three.
ChatGPT went first. Instant Checkout launched on September 29, 2025 with US Etsy sellers, and OpenAI named more than a million Shopify merchants, Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori among them, as the next wave. Single-item purchases came first, with multi-item carts on the roadmap.
Google followed on January 11, 2026 with UCP and checkout inside AI Mode and the Gemini app, rolling out to a small group of US retailers first and expanding over the following months. Shoppers pay with Google Pay using the card and address saved in Google Wallet, and PayPal is on the way.
Every one of these surfaces reads the same product catalog, so one clean feed covers all of them. The store that fixes its data once shows up everywhere the agents shop, and the store that fixes it per channel never finishes.
Is Anyone Actually Shopping This Way?
Agentic and AI-referred shopping is still a small share of retail traffic, but it grew 393% year over year in Q1 2026 and converted 42% better than non-AI traffic in March. Adobe’s analysis of more than a trillion visits to US retail sites is the best data on it, and a year earlier the same traffic converted 38% worse.
That reversal is the whole story. Early AI visitors were window shoppers. Now they arrive pre-sold, since the agent already answered their questions before the click, and they stay 48% longer and view 13% more pages than other visitors. By May 2026 the gap had widened again: Adobe told Digital Commerce 360 that AI traffic converted 54% better and had grown 1,324% since October 2024.
I see it in client numbers too. Exclusive Beauty Club’s ChatGPT revenue grew 2,234% from April 2025 to April 2026, off a base that barely existed. Whether those visits become orders on your store is the question I dig into in do AI citations convert into customers.
AI shoppers arrive pre-sold, so the citation is most of the sale. Adobe’s survey found 39% of consumers had already used AI to shop and 85% of them said it made the experience better. Waiting for it to feel mainstream means starting from behind.
What Agentic Commerce Means for a Shopify Store
Agentic commerce means your product data becomes your storefront and your relationship with the customer stays yours. Both OpenAI’s and Google’s announcements keep the merchant as the merchant of record, so the payment, the fulfillment, the returns, and the customer record all run through you, and you pay a small fee per completed order.
You keep the customer
You keep the customer in agentic commerce, which is the part that separates it from a marketplace. On Amazon the marketplace owns the buyer and the data. In OpenAI’s Instant Checkout, you process the payment, you ship the order, and you own the customer relationship, with ChatGPT acting as the mall.
Your product data does the selling
Your product data does the selling in every agentic flow, since the agent never sees your homepage design. Adobe’s visibility checker found product pages were the weakest spot on retail sites at 66% machine-readable, against 75% for homepages and 74% for category pages, so a third of the pages an agent compares are partly invisible to it. The fix is the same structured data work I lay out in Shopify product schema, plus specs and stock in plain text.
Ranking is organic, for now
Ranking inside ChatGPT’s shopping results is organic and unsponsored today, ranked on relevance to the shopper. Nobody is buying their way onto that shelf yet, so a small store with clean data sits next to a national brand. Reviews carry weight in that comparison, and I cover how much in do AI models read your reviews.
Clean product data is the new storefront. Fix the pages a shopper would compare first, since those are the pages an agent compares first too. That is the first thing I check when a store hires me for AI search work.
Get Your Store Ready in an Afternoon
Getting ready for agentic commerce takes one afternoon in the Shopify admin and one pass over your top products, since Shopify already did the protocol work. Turn on the AI surfaces, then make sure the data they read is complete.
- In Shopify admin, open the Agentic Storefronts settings and turn on the channels you want: ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini
- Check your top 20 products for a title that says what the thing is, not just the model name
- Move specs out of images and into the description text
- Confirm price, stock status, and shipping terms are current on every one of them
- Get review counts and ratings on the page in a form the agent can read
If you sell outside Shopify, the same door exists. Shopify’s Agentic plan opens the Shopify Catalog, its standardized index of billions of products, to non-Shopify merchants, so a WooCommerce or custom store can still get its products in front of the agents through the same feed.
Then treat the rest like search. The agent still finds your pages the way a crawler does, so the work in how to rank in ChatGPT is the same work that gets you picked in an agent’s comparison.
Agentic Commerce Questions I Get From Store Owners
Does agentic commerce replace SEO?
No, agentic commerce does not replace SEO. The agent reads the same pages, feeds, and reviews that Google ranks, and Adobe’s data shows AI-referred traffic is still a fraction of search traffic. What changes is where the click lands: sometimes on your page, sometimes in a checkout inside the chat.
Do you pay to be listed?
You do not pay to be listed in ChatGPT’s shopping results or in Google’s AI Mode checkout. OpenAI charges a small fee only on completed Instant Checkout orders, and results are ranked on relevance, not on spend. Advertising inside these surfaces is a separate question and mostly not open yet.
Can you opt out?
Yes, you can opt out of agentic checkout by leaving the channel off in Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts settings. Your products can still be discovered and linked in AI answers, the way they are in Google’s AI Overviews for Shopify stores, without the buy button inside the chat.
Want Your Store Ready Before the Agents Go Shopping?
Agentic commerce folds discovery, comparison, and checkout into one conversation, and the stores that win it are the ones an agent can read and trust: clean product data first, answer-first content second, citations third.
Book a call and I’ll run your top 20 products through the same readiness checks I use for clients and hand you the three fixes that matter most. If you want the whole thing built for you, that is what my AI search services cover.
