Does ChatGPT Use Reddit? How Forums Shape AI Answers
ChatGPT uses Reddit through a data partnership OpenAI signed in May 2024, which sends Reddit posts into ChatGPT through Reddit’s Data API. Ahrefs found ChatGPT cites only 1.93% of the Reddit pages it pulls, so it reads far more threads than it credits. For best results, treat Reddit as something ChatGPT reads about you.
Below is how the pipeline works, how often Reddit shows up, and what a Shopify store should do about it.
Key Points
- OpenAI has had paid access to Reddit’s Data API since May 16, 2024, and Google signed its own Reddit deal three months earlier.
- Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations has ranged from about 0.5% to 3.8% in 2026, depending on the week you measure.
- Ahrefs found 67.8% of the pages ChatGPT retrieved and did not cite were Reddit pages, so threads shape answers without showing up as sources.
- A disclosed founder account that answers questions is the only way to take part that survives moderators.
How Does ChatGPT Get Reddit Content?
ChatGPT gets Reddit content through Reddit’s Data API, under a partnership OpenAI announced on May 16, 2024. OpenAI’s announcement says the API provides “real-time, structured, and unique content from Reddit,” so ChatGPT is not scraping threads the way an unlicensed bot would.
That same OpenAI and Reddit announcement also says OpenAI will bring Reddit content into ChatGPT and into new products. So the deal covers the answers your shoppers see today, not only model training, and it sits apart from the search step in how ChatGPT picks its sources.
Google got there first. In February 2024, Reddit signed a licensing deal with Google that NBC News reported was valued at roughly $60 million, which is why Reddit threads also feed Gemini and Google’s AI answers.
Think about what those companies are paying for. Your product page says what you want said, and a thread says what happened after the box arrived. Models need the second kind of text to answer “what is it like to own this?”, and Reddit holds two decades of it.
Once you know Reddit comes in through its own pipe, the citation numbers below make more sense. Regular web pages come in through search, and Reddit threads arrive on a separate track with separate rules.
How Often Does ChatGPT Cite Reddit?
ChatGPT cites Reddit in roughly 0.5% to 3.8% of its citations, and the number swings by the month. Promptwatch measured a steady 3.8% share from July 18 through August 7, 2026, then an average of 0.5% from August 14 to 17. That is an 86% drop in about a week.
| Period | Reddit’s share of citations | Who measured it |
|---|---|---|
| Aug 2024 to Oct 2025 | 3.11% across all AI models | Profound |
| September 2025 | Fell from about 7% to about 1% in ChatGPT | Profound |
| Jul 18 to Aug 7, 2026 | 3.8% in ChatGPT | Promptwatch |
| Aug 14 to 17, 2026 | 0.5% in ChatGPT | Promptwatch |
The longer view comes from Profound’s study of Reddit in AI search, which covered more than 4 billion citations. Reddit was the most cited domain across all models at 3.11%, ahead of YouTube at 2.13% and Wikipedia at 1.35%. Inside ChatGPT, Reddit ranked second behind Wikipedia.
But that same study recorded the first crash. Reddit’s share in ChatGPT dropped from about 7% to about 1% in September 2025, then climbed back to around 3%, which is a loud example of how AI citations churn from month to month.
Then it happened again. The Promptwatch data on the August 2026 drop shows no recovery through its last data point on August 17, and nobody outside OpenAI has confirmed the cause. Promptwatch is a tracking vendor measuring its own prompt set, so read these as direction, not a census.
So I would not plan around any one month’s chart. Reddit’s citation share in ChatGPT has crashed twice in twelve months, so never build your AI plan on one source.
Reddit Shapes Answers Even When It Is Not Cited
Reddit shapes ChatGPT answers even when it is not cited: Ahrefs found 67.8% of the pages ChatGPT retrieved but never cited were Reddit pages. The model reads threads to learn what owners think, then credits a different page for the answer.
Ahrefs published that number in its study of why ChatGPT cites one page over another, built on 1.4 million prompts. Reddit had its own category in ChatGPT’s retrieval data, with more than 16 million data points. Even so, ChatGPT cited the Reddit pages it pulled just 1.93% of the time.
Compare that to regular search results in the same study, which got cited 88.46% of the time once retrieved. ChatGPT treats a search result as a source to show and a thread as background to read.
That gap changes what “being on Reddit” is worth. A citation chart only counts the links ChatGPT shows, and it is the same reason I tell clients brand mentions now do work backlinks used to do. The threads ChatGPT read on the way to the answer never appear in that chart, and they still set the tone of what it says about your category.
So a thread that names your product, says who it fits, and admits one flaw can shape an answer that links to somebody else’s page. A Reddit thread can decide what ChatGPT says about your product without ever appearing as a source.
Most SEOs will tell you to chase the citation. I care more about what the thread says, since that is the part the model carries into its answer.
Which Shopping Questions Pull From Reddit?
The shopping questions that pull from Reddit most are how-to questions, which make up 32% of ChatGPT’s Reddit citations in BrightEdge’s data against 8% in Google AI Overviews. Comparison questions and after-purchase questions come next.
BrightEdge’s comparison of Reddit use in ChatGPT and AI Overviews found ChatGPT surfaces Reddit in roughly 55% more queries than AI Overviews. For a store, the three question types look like this:
- How-to questions: “How do I descale an espresso machine?” or “how do I break in leather boots?” These are 32% of ChatGPT’s Reddit citations, four times the AI Overviews rate.
- Consideration questions: “Is the X worth it?” or “X or Y for a small kitchen?” ChatGPT leaned on Reddit for 11.9% of these, against 9.8% in AI Overviews.
- Ownership questions: “Why does my X keep doing this?” ChatGPT used Reddit 1.7 times as often as AI Overviews after the purchase.
Notice which one is missing from that list. “Best X” head terms are not where Reddit does its heaviest lifting in ChatGPT. The problems and doubts around a product are, and AI models read your reviews for the same kind of owner detail.
That also tells you what to read. Search your product type plus “reddit” in ChatGPT and in Google, open the top five threads, and write down every complaint and every phrase buyers use.
From there, put those phrases on your product pages and in your FAQ. Read the top five threads in your category once a month and borrow the vocabulary, not the opinions.
Show Up in Threads Without Getting Banned
You show up in Reddit threads without getting banned by posting as a disclosed founder who answers questions, since Reddit’s spam policy forbids “repeated or unsolicited mass engagement.” A brand account that only drops links breaks that rule on day one.
Reddit’s current spam policy is more direct about stores than the old self-promotion wiki was. It says that if your contributions consist primarily of links to a business you run, you should be thoughtful about how often you post or consider buying ads. Each community then adds its own rules on top, and moderators enforce those harder than Reddit does.
Inside those limits, this is the order I run it in for clients on my AI search services for Shopify stores:
- Pick three to five subreddits where your buyers already ask questions, and read each one’s rules before you post anything.
- Create one account in your own name or the brand’s name, and say you are the founder in your profile and in any comment about your product.
- Answer how-to and troubleshooting questions for a month without mentioning what you sell.
- Mention your product only when someone asks for options, and name a competitor that fits better when one does.
- Use Reddit’s Brand Affiliate tag on any post or comment that has commercial intent.
Whatever you do after that, never fake reviews or run second accounts that praise your brand. Moderators catch new accounts fast, and a “this brand astroturfs” thread is exactly the kind of owner opinion a model picks up and repeats.
Just know this is slow work. I budget about two hours a month per brand for it, and I treat it as one part of mention-building, not a campaign of its own. One useful comment from a disclosed founder outlasts fifty drive-by plugs.
What Reddit Means for a Shopify Store
For a Shopify store, Reddit means your category’s threads are part of your sales funnel on ChatGPT, whether you read them or not. When a shopper asks for a “budget espresso machine that is easy to clean,” the model has already read owners arguing about that exact question.
For a store with a small catalog, that works in your favor. A national brand gets discussed in hundreds of threads it cannot steer. A niche brand gets discussed in a handful, and one clear founder reply in each of them can be most of what exists about the product.
The same threads also show you where the brand’s story is wrong. If three threads say your sizing runs small and your product page says “true to size,” ChatGPT has two versions to choose from. It will usually repeat the one owners wrote.
So fix the page first and the thread second. Update the size chart, the materials, the care steps, or whatever the complaint was about. After that, reply in the thread as the founder and say what changed.
I will concede the limits here. Some categories have almost no Reddit discussion, and a store selling replacement gaskets will not find a community arguing about gaskets. In that case the how-to questions still exist, and your own help pages and product FAQs are where ChatGPT should find the answers.
Should You Watch Forums Beyond Reddit?
Yes, you should watch forums beyond Reddit. Reddit’s share of ChatGPT citations fell 86% in one week of August 2026, and a plan built on one site falls with it. Niche forums, YouTube comments, and Q&A sites feed the same kind of owner opinion into AI answers.
Does Google’s AI use Reddit as much as ChatGPT?
Google’s AI uses Reddit more steadily than ChatGPT does. In the same Promptwatch window where ChatGPT’s Reddit share collapsed, Reddit held 2.37% of AI Overview citations in the first week and 2.10% in the last.
That steadiness makes sense given Google’s licensing deal and how much Reddit already ranks in regular Google results. If your buyers search on Google first, the threads ranking for your category keywords are the ones to read.
Can you measure what Reddit does for sales?
You can measure Reddit’s direct traffic in Shopify and GA4, but you cannot measure the threads ChatGPT read and did not cite. Referral visits from reddit.com show up like any other source, and they are usually small.
So I track two softer signals too. One is whether what ChatGPT says about the brand starts to match what owners say in threads. The other is branded search in Search Console, which tends to rise when people keep seeing your name in places they trust.
Do Reddit ads get you into ChatGPT answers?
Reddit ads do not get you into ChatGPT answers. The threads ChatGPT reads are posts and comments written by users, and a promoted post is not an owner’s opinion.
Still, ads are the route Reddit’s own spam policy points stores toward when they want reach. They can be worth testing for traffic, and I keep that budget separate from the mention work, since it does a different job.
Want Your Brand in the Threads AI Reads?
ChatGPT uses Reddit through a paid pipeline, cites it less than the charts suggest, and reads it far more than it credits. The stores that benefit are named by real owners in the right threads and borrow the buyer’s own words for their pages.
If you want to know which communities feed AI answers in your niche, book a call and I will pull the sources ChatGPT and Google cite for your category and map the five threads worth your two hours a month. If you would rather have the work handled, that is what my AI search services cover.
