Do AI Models Read Your Reviews?

AI models do read your reviews: ChatGPT writes its product summaries from reviews on public websites, and Google feeds reviews into AI Mode through its Shopping Graph. But most AI crawlers can’t run JavaScript, so reviews loaded by a widget can be invisible. For best results, get your review text into the page HTML.

Key Points

  • ChatGPT’s review summaries are written by the model from reviews on public websites, and OpenAI does not verify them.
  • Google’s AI Mode shops from a catalog of more than 50 billion listings that carry reviews.
  • None of the major AI crawlers outside Google ran JavaScript when Vercel tested them, so widget-only reviews can go unread.
  • Brands with an active profile on a review site were cited in 53.5% of AI answers in one 2026 study, against 1% for brands without one.
  • You can check what AI sees on your own product page in about two minutes.

Which AI Models Read Reviews, and Where?

ChatGPT, Google’s AI Mode, Gemini, and Amazon’s shopping assistant all read reviews, and each one reads them from a different place. That difference decides which of your reviews count. A review that feeds Google’s AI may never reach ChatGPT, and the reverse is true too.

AI modelWhere it reads reviewsWhat it does with them
ChatGPT shoppingPublic websites and product feedsWrites a short review summary per product
ChatGPT shopping researchProduct pages across the webBuilds a buyer’s guide with tradeoffs
Google AI Mode and GeminiGoogle’s Shopping Graph and crawled pagesCompares products inside the answer
Amazon’s assistantAmazon’s own verified reviewsSummarizes what buyers liked and disliked

So “do AI models read your reviews” has three separate answers for a Shopify store. Your on-site reviews matter to any crawler that can load them, the reviews you send Google matter to Google, and reviews on other sites matter to everyone. The sections below take those one at a time.

How ChatGPT Uses Reviews in Shopping Answers

ChatGPT uses reviews in shopping answers by writing its own summary of what reviewers said. OpenAI’s shopping help page says those summaries are generated by the model from reviews on public websites, and that product results weigh things like price, reviews, and ease of use.

ChatGPT does not check whether reviews are real

That same page says reviews and ratings are not verified by OpenAI. So whatever the open web says about your product is what ChatGPT repeats, fair or not. It also says product results are not ads and that ads are kept separate, which means you can’t buy a better summary.

If a shopper can read your reviews on the open web, an AI model can too. That cuts both ways, and most stores have never checked which way it cuts for them. The full list of what feeds a recommendation is in my guide on how to get ChatGPT to recommend your products.

Shopping research reads product pages directly

ChatGPT’s shopping research mode goes further. It asks the shopper a few questions, reads product pages across the web, and hands back a buyer’s guide with top picks and tradeoffs. OpenAI says it pulls price, availability, reviews, specs, and images from those pages and avoids low-quality or spammy sites.

Every tradeoff that guide lists for your product comes from something written about it. Reviews are the biggest pile of writing most products have. When that pile is thin, the model fills the gap from whatever else it finds, and that is the direction agentic commerce is taking every store.

How Google’s AI Uses Your Reviews

Google’s AI uses your reviews through the Shopping Graph, its catalog of product data. Google says the Shopping Graph holds more than 50 billion product listings with details like reviews, prices, and availability, and that AI Mode’s shopping answers are built on it with Gemini.

Getting your reviews into that catalog is a Merchant Center job. Google’s Product Ratings program shows star ratings from merchants, review aggregators, review sites, and Google users, and it asks for at least 50 reviews across your products. You can upload a reviews feed yourself or let an approved review app send it.

Google also has an edge the other models lack. Gemini reads pages through Googlebot, which runs JavaScript, so Google can see a review widget that other AI crawlers miss. I cover the rest of the setup in my guide to Google AI Mode for Shopify stores.

Can AI Crawlers See the Reviews on Your Shopify Store?

AI crawlers can see the reviews on your Shopify store only when the review text is in the page’s HTML. In a Vercel study of AI crawlers, none of the major ones outside Google rendered JavaScript, including OpenAI’s, Anthropic’s, and Perplexity’s. A review widget that loads by script gave them nothing to read.

That study is from December 2024, and it is still the best public test I know of. No AI company has announced JavaScript rendering since. So the safe assumption is that ChatGPT’s crawler sees your raw HTML and nothing more.

What the big Shopify review apps do

The review apps have started fixing this on their end, which is good news if your setup is current.

Review appHow reviews reach AI crawlersLimit to know
Judge.meAdds review content to the page as server-rendered HTMLNeeds the new review widget installed as an app block
LooxStores a sample of reviews in Shopify metafields that the theme printsFirst 40 reviews per product, Online Store 2.0 themes only
YotpoDefault widget loads with JavaScriptPutting reviews in the HTML takes a developer setup

Judge.me’s help article on AI shopping assistants says the HTML version can be read without running JavaScript. Loox’s guide to how AI assistants read reviews describes the 40-review sample. Both were published or updated in August 2026, so a store that installed either app years ago on an older theme may not have the new behavior.

Check your own product page in two minutes

  1. Open a product page that has reviews.
  2. Right-click and choose View Page Source. This shows the raw HTML, before any scripts run.
  3. Copy a sentence from one of your reviews.
  4. Press Ctrl+F or Cmd+F in the source and paste it.

If the sentence is there, AI crawlers can read that review. If it isn’t, your reviews are arriving by script and ChatGPT’s crawler is probably missing them. A review a crawler can’t load is a review AI never read.

While you’re in the source, search for “aggregateRating” to see whether your star rating is in your structured data. That markup is a separate job from the review text, and I walk through it in my guide to Shopify product schema.

What AI Does With a Review Once It Reads It

AI turns your reviews into a short summary of what buyers liked and disliked, and it leans on the points that repeat. One review that calls a jacket “warm” does little.

Thirty reviews that say it stayed warm on a ski lift at 10 degrees give the model a specific claim. It can pass that claim to the next shopper who asks for a jacket for skiing.

That’s why the wording of your review request matters. “How was your order?” gets you “Great, thanks.” This version gets you sentences a model can quote:

“What did you use it for, what size did you buy, and what surprised you?”

You can see the result yourself. Ask ChatGPT to compare your best seller with a competitor’s, then read the summary it writes for each. The phrases it picks, good and bad, came from real review text somewhere on the web, and most store owners are surprised by which reviews made it in.

Reviews on Other Sites Count Too

Reviews on other sites count too, and the gap between having them and not having them is wide. A Trustpilot study run by Seer Interactive looked at more than 800,000 AI responses across 1,926 brands. Brands with no active Trustpilot profile were cited 1% of the time, and brands with one were cited 53.5% of the time.

Trustpilot paid for that study and it measures Trustpilot profiles, so the exact figures flatter the sponsor. Even so, the finding lines up with everything else here. Brands with more than 80 reviews that also replied to them regularly reached 75.3%, and review and trust sites were the second most cited type of source at 14% of citations.

Forums belong in this bucket. A thread titled “is [your brand] legit?” is a review page you don’t control, and I cover how ChatGPT uses Reddit in its own post.

The same goes for retailer pages. If you also sell on Amazon or through a big-box site, the reviews there are public, plentiful, and easy for a model to find. A product with 12 reviews on your store and 900 on a retailer’s page will be summarized from the 900.

This is also where the difference between a review and a testimonial starts to matter. A model trusts a page the merchant can’t edit more than a quote the merchant picked, which is the point I make in reviews vs testimonials.

Make Your Reviews Readable to AI

To make your reviews readable to AI, put the text in your page HTML, send your ratings to Google, and build a review base on at least one outside site. Those three moves cover ChatGPT’s crawler, Google’s Shopping Graph, and the third-party sources both of them cite.

This is the order I work in on a client store:

  • Fix the rendering first. Run the two-minute check, then update your review app’s widget or theme block until the review text shows in the source.
  • Turn on the Google feed. Connect your review app to Merchant Center, or upload a reviews feed, and work toward the 50-review minimum.
  • Ask every buyer. Send a review request after each order, and ask for specifics like fit, size, and how they use the product.
  • Reply to the rough reviews. A calm public reply is part of what the model reads, and it shows a shopper the problem got handled.
  • Claim one outside profile. Pick the review site your shoppers already use, claim your page, and point some review requests there.

After the setup, steady flow matters more than a big number. A model that summarizes common likes and dislikes needs recent text to work from, and a product with nine reviews from 2023 gives it almost nothing.

Even a handful of new reviews a month keeps the summary current. Those same reviews also do a second job on the page itself, which I measure in how reviews impact conversion rate.

Just don’t fake any of it. The FTC’s rule banning fake reviews took effect in October 2024, and it covers AI-generated ones. A model that compares what many sites say about you is also the reader most likely to notice when your own ratings don’t match everyone else’s.

If you’d rather hand this off, review visibility is part of the audit I run in my AI search services.

Review Questions Store Owners Ask

Do AI models read bad reviews?

Yes, AI models read bad reviews, and they repeat the complaints that show up more than once. ChatGPT’s summaries describe what reviewers liked and disliked, so one angry review rarely surfaces, but ten that mention the same broken zipper will. Fix the product problem and the summary follows.

How many reviews do you need for AI to use them?

You need about 50 reviews across your products for Google and more than 80 on an outside site for the strongest results. The 50 is Google’s minimum for product ratings, and the 80 comes from the Trustpilot study above. Below those numbers a model can still read your reviews, but it has less to summarize.

Do AI models read reviews on Amazon?

Yes, AI models read reviews on Amazon, and Amazon’s own assistant reads nothing else. Amazon has said its AI review highlights draw only on reviews from verified purchases on its site. Outside Amazon, those product pages are public, so a model researching your product can find them like any other retailer page.

Do star ratings matter, or only the review text?

Star ratings matter most to Google, and the text matters most to ChatGPT. Google’s product ratings show the stars and the count in its listings. ChatGPT’s summary is built from what reviewers wrote, so a 4.8 with no written reviews gives it very little to say about you.

Does replying to reviews help?

Yes, replying to reviews helps. Brands in the Trustpilot study that replied regularly and had over 80 reviews were cited 75.3% of the time, against 53.5% for brands that only had a profile. Your reply is public text too, so a model reads your side of the story along with the complaint.

Want to Know What AI Reads About Your Store?

AI models read your reviews on your site when the HTML lets them, in Google’s catalog when you send them, and on every outside site where shoppers talk about you. Then they repeat what they find to people who may never visit your store.

Book a call and I’ll run the source check on your top products and show you what ChatGPT and Google’s AI say about them today. If you want the fixes handled, that is what my AI search services for Shopify stores cover.
