GEO vs AEO: Are They the Same Thing?

GEO and AEO are not the same thing, but they overlap so much that treating them as one job is usually the right call. GEO is about getting your pages quoted in AI-written answers wherever they appear. AEO is about winning direct answers to questions, a practice that started with featured snippets.

What GEO Covers

GEO covers everything you do to make your pages more likely to be quoted in AI-written answers. The target is the response itself. When ChatGPT or Google’s AI features write an answer, GEO work makes your page one of the sources they lean on.

The term comes from a 2023 Princeton-led research paper that tested nine ways to get content into AI answers. The tactics that moved the needle were the boring ones: adding statistics, quoting named sources, and citing references. Visibility in AI responses rose by up to 40% in their tests.

Notice what is missing from that list. There are no secret files and no prompt tricks anywhere in the winning methods. I walk through the full practice in my breakdown of what GEO is and how to do it, and most of it is work you would recognize from good content. A page that answers the question in its first two sentences is already doing GEO.

Still, the scope is the part that feels new. GEO covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode all at once. Each engine picks sources a little differently, but they all lift the same kind of passage: short, sourced, and confident.

What AEO Covers

AEO covers winning the direct answer to a question, wherever that answer box lives. Before chatbots, that meant featured snippets at the top of Google. Today it includes AI Overviews and chat answers too, which is why AEO and GEO keep blurring into each other.

The discipline is older than GEO. SEOs have chased answer boxes for a decade, and Google’s own featured snippets documentation still sets the rules: its systems pick the snippet automatically, and you cannot mark your own content as the answer. You earn it with clear formatting and a direct answer.

That history matters, because it means AEO has a track record. The stores that won snippets did it with question headings and tight answer paragraphs. I cover the practice in my guide to what AEO is, and if your pages already win snippets, you are ahead on both acronyms.

If you are not sure where you stand, a simple test keeps AEO honest. Type your page’s H1 into Google and look at what wins the answer box today. If the winning passage is clearer, shorter, or better sourced than yours, you know exactly what to fix.

Where GEO and AEO Overlap

GEO and AEO overlap on almost every task that matters. Both reward the same page: a direct answer up top, headings that match real questions, stats with sources behind them, and no crawler roadblocks. Optimize for one and you have mostly optimized for the other.

That is not an accident. AI engines learned from the same web Google ranks, and they reward the same clarity. Put my 10-point AEO checklist next to any GEO guide and you will find the same fixes in a slightly different order.

The door is open on the AI side too. OpenAI says any website or publisher can choose to appear in ChatGPT search, and the bar for getting picked looks a lot like the bar for a snippet. Write for the answer, not for the acronym.

The Differences That Matter

The differences that matter between GEO and AEO come down to scope and measurement. GEO reaches past Google into every AI engine, and it is harder to measure, because most AI tools give you nothing like a search console.

Measurement is the practical gap between them. AEO wins show up as impressions and clicks in Search Console. GEO wins often show up as nothing at all: a shopper asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, sees your brand named, and types your store into Google an hour later as a branded search.

On top of that, the stakes are rising for both. Pew Research found an AI summary on about 18% of Google searches, and users clicked a regular result on just 8% of visits when a summary appeared, versus 15% without one.

The answer is absorbing the click, so the only durable move is to be the answer. For how these two terms fit alongside classic SEO, my SEO vs AEO vs GEO comparison maps all three. Spend your time on answers and let the acronyms fight it out without you.

Want to Show Up in the Answers?

You do not need a GEO plan and a separate AEO plan. You need pages that answer real questions with real proof, on a site every crawler can reach. That one plan covers snippets, AI Overviews, and chat answers at the same time.

If you want to know how your store looks in AI answers right now, book a call. I’ll check what ChatGPT and Google’s AI features say about your brand and show you which pages are worth fixing first.
