Can You Advertise on ChatGPT and AI Overviews?
You can advertise on ChatGPT and in Google AI Overviews as a labeled ad, but you cannot pay your way into the answer itself. OpenAI is testing ads in ChatGPT, Google sells ads in and around AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Microsoft runs ads in Copilot. All three keep the organic answer separate from the ad slot.
Knowing where that line sits tells you where to spend and where to earn.
Key Points
| Platform | Ads Today | Can You Buy the Answer? |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Yes, above, below, and within | No |
| ChatGPT | Testing, Free and Go tiers | No, answers stay separate |
| Microsoft Copilot | Yes, auto opt-in from Bing ads | No |
Where Can You Buy Ads in AI Answers?
You can buy ads in AI answers on Google, ChatGPT, and Copilot today. Google shows Search and Shopping ads above, below, and within AI Overviews, and its Google Ads documentation confirms in-overview placements are live in a dozen countries, with AI Mode formats in testing for 2026.
This all arrived fast for a reason. AI answers are where a growing share of buying questions get asked, and every platform needs the revenue to pay for the compute behind them. Expect more formats, not fewer, by next year.
Notice what you are buying in every case: a labeled slot near the answer. The spend logic is the same one I walk through in does Google Ads help SEO, just moved into a chat window.
OpenAI, for its part, started testing ads in ChatGPT in February 2026 for Free and Go tiers, expanding to nine countries by August. Ads are labeled as sponsored, visually separated from the response, and matched to the conversation topic. Paid tiers see no ads at all, which tells you how OpenAI wants the answer experience perceived.
Can You Buy the Answer Itself?
You cannot pay to show up in the AI answer itself on any major platform. OpenAI states flat out that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, and that its shopping results are organic and unsponsored, ranked on relevance. Google and Microsoft draw the same line between ad slots and generated answers.
So be skeptical of any vendor selling “guaranteed AI citations.” Nobody has that product, because the platforms have not built a way to sell it. The models pick sources based on what they can crawl and trust, which is the machinery I break down in how ChatGPT picks its sources.
There is a business reason the wall holds. These platforms are fighting for trust against each other, and an answer that turns out to be bought is the fastest way to lose a user for good. OpenAI even tells advertisers they only get aggregate performance data, not conversations.
Citations are earned media, and ads are rented shelf space next to them. The platforms profit from keeping those separate, so expect the wall to hold.
Are AI Ads Worth It for Your Store?
Paying to show up in AI answers is worth testing only if your regular search ads already convert, because right now you cannot even target these placements directly. Google says advertisers cannot opt in or out of AI Overview slots, and there is no segmented reporting to tell you what they earned.
Read that again from a budget owner’s seat. You are paying for placements you did not choose, in a surface you cannot measure separately, priced by the same auction as everything else. That is not a reason to panic, but it is a reason to watch your search campaigns closer this year than last.
The same rule applies here as everywhere in paid: rented traffic stops the day the spend stops. I show what that looks like in real accounts in what happens when you turn off ads.
Microsoft goes further: its Copilot ads documentation says eligible campaigns serve there automatically with no opt-out. Your budget may already be buying AI placements without you noticing.
If you want to know what these slots are doing for you today, the honest checks are:
- Watch Top Ads performance in Google Ads, since in-overview ads report there
- Compare conversion rates before and after AI placements reached your market
- Add negative keywords, which still apply in Copilot the same as web search
Whatever those checks show, treat AI ad slots as an extension of search ads, not a new channel. Same budget discipline, same profit math, less reporting than you are used to.
What Should You Do Instead?
Instead of trying to pay your way into AI answers, earn the citation the models already want to give: crawlable pages, direct answers, and your brand named on sites the models trust. That inventory is not for sale, which is exactly why it compounds.
The earned path costs time instead of budget, and I put real numbers on it in how much AEO costs. Allowing the right crawlers takes an afternoon. Rewriting your top pages to answer first takes a few weeks. Getting named on the lists and review sites the models pull from takes months. But none of it stops working when a campaign ends, and no competitor can outbid you for it.
Even Google’s own AI Mode ads pitch is telling: even while selling ad slots, it describes the answers as generated from what Gemini finds, not from ad spend. The organic layer is where the durable visibility lives.
Spend on ads for this quarter, earn citations for next year. Mentions on trusted sites move AI visibility more than link volume does, and I compare the two in brand mentions vs backlinks.
Want to Show Up Without Renting the Slot?
You can rent space next to AI answers on every major platform, and none of them will sell you the answer itself. The stores that show up organically got there with fundamentals: open crawler access, liftable answers, and mentions in the right places.
Book a call and I’ll show you where your brand stands in AI answers today, plus the three earned moves that would get you cited before your competitors figure this out. And when you want the ongoing work handled, my AI search services for Shopify stores pick up from there.
