What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained

AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of writing and formatting your pages so Google’s AI Overviews, featured snippets, ChatGPT, and Perplexity can lift a direct answer from them and name you as the source. Google’s own guide calls this work “still SEO.” For best results, treat it as one job with one budget.

Below is what counts as an answer engine, how AEO differs from SEO, the five steps I run for stores, and how to tell whether any of it is working.

Key Points

  • AEO is answer-first writing on top of normal SEO: a real question as the heading, the answer in the first sentence, and proof right after it.
  • Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, so a page that can rank is already eligible.
  • Only about 38% of the pages cited in AI Overviews rank in Google’s top 10, which means a clear answer on a page-two post can still get quoted.
  • Shopping searches trigger AI Overviews about 3% of the time, so a store’s AEO work belongs on its guides, FAQs, and comparison pages first.

What Is AEO?

AEO is answer engine optimization: shaping a page so a machine can pull one short, correct answer out of it and credit you. The page still has to rank and still has to be useful to a person. AEO adds the habit of answering the question in the first sentence under the heading.

The name is older than ChatGPT. Jason Barnard was giving conference talks on “answer engine optimisation” by early 2018, back when the only answer engine most of us dealt with was the featured snippet box. That history is why people still ask whether AEO is just featured snippets, and the short version is that snippets were the first version of it.

What changed is the number of places an answer can show. A snippet quoted one page, while an AI Overview blends several and ChatGPT writes its own reply from whatever it reads. The writing that earns the quote stayed the same.

Which Tools Count as Answer Engines?

An answer engine is any tool that answers the question itself instead of handing you a list of links. Six of them matter to a store today, and each one gets its answers from a different place.

Answer engineWhere the answer comes fromWhat you can measure
Featured snippetsOne page in Google’s index, quoted as writtenRankings and clicks in Search Console
People Also AskOne page per question, quoted as writtenRankings in Search Console
Google AI OverviewsSeveral indexed pages, rewritten by GeminiImpressions in Search Console
Google AI ModeMany related searches run at once, then rewrittenImpressions in Search Console
ChatGPTWeb search results plus what the model learned in trainingReferral visits in GA4
PerplexityLive web search with numbered sourcesReferral visits in GA4

Google’s half of that table shares one index, so a page that earns a snippet is already in the pool for the AI features. The chat tools run their own searches, and their picks overlap with Google’s less than you would guess.

If you only have time for one engine, start with Google. It still handles about 90% of searches worldwide, and the work you do for its answer boxes is the same work the chat tools reward.

How Is AEO Different From SEO?

AEO differs from SEO in the last 10% of the work: SEO earns the page its ranking, and AEO shapes the answer on that page so an engine can quote it. Google’s guide to optimizing for generative AI says it directly: “optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”

That same guide names AEO and GEO and tells site owners to put effective SEO ahead of “AEO/GEO hacks.” Its companion page on AI features adds that there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.”

So where does the extra 10% come from? Ahrefs checked 4 million URLs cited in AI Overviews and found 37.9% of them ranked in the top 10 for that search, down from about 76% in mid-2025. Another 31% ranked outside the top 100. Google runs many related searches behind each answer, and a page with a clean answer to one of those side questions gets pulled in.

Ranking gets you into the pool, and a clear answer gets you picked. The same split shows up between the two newer acronyms, and I put them head to head in GEO vs AEO.

Why AEO Matters for a Store

AEO matters for a store because answer boxes take clicks from every result below them: Pew found people clicked a regular result on 8% of searches with an AI summary, against 15% without one. The link inside the summary got a click on just 1% of those visits.

Those numbers sound like a reason to give up on informational content. I read them the other way. The store named in the answer keeps its place in front of the shopper, and every store below the box loses about half its clicks.

Still, check where the boxes show up before you rewrite your whole site. Ahrefs looked at 146 million results pages and found AI Overviews on 20.5% of them. Informational searches triggered one 21.4% of the time, commercial searches 4.3%, and the Shopping category 3.2%.

For a store, that points AEO at the guides, the FAQ, the sizing and care pages, and the “best X for Y” posts. Your product and collection pages still win on regular rankings. I map the full plan by page type in AEO for ecommerce.

How to Do AEO in 5 Steps

1. Collect the questions buyers ask

Start with Google’s autocomplete, the People Also Ask box, your support inbox, and the queries in Search Console that begin with how, what, which, can, or does. Sort the list by how close each question sits to a sale. A sizing or shipping question earns its page faster than trivia does.

Twenty questions is enough for a first pass. You will usually find that several of them already have a page on your site that answers them badly. Those pages go to the top of the list, since a rewrite of an indexed page shows results faster than a new post.

2. Put the answer in the first sentence

Write the question as the heading and the full answer as the first sentence under it. Under “How long does shipping take?” the first sentence is “Standard shipping takes 3 to 5 business days,” and the story about your fulfillment partner comes after.

A before and after makes the change plain. Before: “At our company, we know how important fast delivery is, which is why we partner with trusted carriers.” After: “Standard shipping takes 3 to 5 business days, and orders placed before 2 p.m. Eastern ship the same day.” The second version answers the question, gives two numbers, and can be quoted without an edit.

Microsoft’s guidance for Bing’s AI answers explains why this works: headings “act like chapter titles” that mark where one idea stops and the next starts, and a clean question-and-answer pair can be lifted word for word.

3. Keep the answer short and near the top

Keep the quotable answer to two or three plain sentences, and put the most important ones early on the page. Two studies summarized by Practical Ecommerce back that up. One found 44.3% of ChatGPT’s citations came from the first 30% of a page’s text.

The other found that sentences of 6 to 20 words made up 92.4% of the citations in AI Mode and Gemini. Long, winding sentences rarely get quoted. My 10-point AEO checklist turns that into a page-by-page pass.

4. Add proof nobody else has

Back each answer with a number, a test, or an example from your own store. Google’s guide draws a line between commodity content, which repeats common knowledge, and content with “unique expert or experienced takes.”

For a store this proof is cheap. You have order data, return reasons, product tests, and photos of the thing in use. No publisher has those, and a quoted answer needs a reason to be yours.

So a care page for a wool blanket should say how many washes your own test blanket survived, not that “proper care extends the life of your product.” Ten other pages already carry the second sentence, and an engine has no reason to pick yours for it.

5. Make sure the page can be crawled

Check that the page is indexed and that the answer sits in the page’s HTML. Google says its AI models use “publicly accessible, crawlable content,” and Microsoft warns that AI systems may not render hidden content, so an answer tucked inside a tab or accordion can get skipped.

Open Search Console’s URL Inspection tool for each page you rewrite. If Google has not indexed it, no amount of formatting will get it quoted. The same goes for a page blocked in robots.txt or tagged nosnippet, which tells every answer box to leave your text alone.

What AEO Does Not Require

AEO does not require new files, special markup, or chopped-up content, and Google’s guide says so in as many words. Most of what gets sold as an AEO add-on falls into this list:

  • A new machine-readable file. Google says you “don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown,” and that Search ignores them.
  • Special schema. The guide says structured data “isn’t required for generative AI search.”
  • Chunking. There is “no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it.”
  • A separate set of AI pages. One good page that answers the question serves the ranking and the answer box.

If a proposal bills for those items, ask what the page-level work is. I rank the errors I see most in the 7 AEO mistakes that cost you AI citations.

How to Tell If AEO Is Working

You can tell AEO is working when three numbers rise together: AI impressions in Search Console, AI Assistant sessions in GA4, and branded searches. No single report covers all three, so check each one monthly.

Search Console’s generative AI report shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It counts impressions only, with no clicks, and I walk through it in my guide to the AI performance report in Search Console.

On the GA4 side, the AI Assistant channel collects visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and similar tools. Expect that number to be small and to grow.

Branded search is the quiet one. When an answer engine names your store, some readers type your name into Google later, and that lift shows up under your brand queries in Search Console. Track citations and branded search along with clicks, since clicks alone will tell you AEO is failing when it is working.

AEO Questions Store Owners Ask

How much does AEO cost?

AEO costs $1,000 to $5,000 a month for most stores, and that price is a normal SEO retainer with the AEO work inside it. Doing it yourself costs only your time. I break the numbers down in how much AEO costs.

Do you need a separate AEO agency?

You do not need a separate AEO agency if you already pay for SEO, since Google treats the two as the same work. Hand the question list to whoever already edits your pages. I cover the exceptions in should you hire an AEO agency.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

AEO is not the same as GEO, but for most stores it is the same job. AEO aims at the direct answer to one question, and GEO aims at getting your brand and pages into AI-written answers on ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and I explain what GEO is in its own guide. One plan and one set of pages covers both.

Does AEO help with ChatGPT, or only Google?

AEO helps with ChatGPT too, since ChatGPT searches the web, reads the pages it finds, and quotes the clearest passage. The 44.3% figure in step 3 came from ChatGPT citations. Just know ChatGPT also leans on what other sites say about you, which no rewrite of your own page controls.

How long does AEO take to work?

AEO takes about one to seven days to show on a page Google already ranks, since AI Overviews draw from the same index as regular search. A brand-new page on a new topic follows normal SEO timelines, which run in months.

Where to Start If You Want AEO Handled

The fastest place to start AEO is the page you already rank on page one or two with, rewritten so the answer leads. That is the first job in my AI search services for Shopify stores, and it is the cheapest win on most sites.

Fieldsheer is the proof I point to. One buying guide ranked #1 for “best heated jackets for women” within two weeks and was cited in Google’s AI answer in the same window. By spring 2026 ChatGPT named Fieldsheer its top pick, and the Fieldsheer case study shows each step.

Want Answer Engines to Quote Your Store?

AEO is answer-first writing on the SEO you already need: real questions, direct answers, proof, and a page Google can crawl. The stores getting quoted made quoting easy.

If you want to know where your store stands, book a call and I’ll pull your Search Console, check what the answer engines say about your brand, and show you the three pages to rewrite first. The ongoing work is what my AI search services cover.
