Will AI Search Replace Google?

No, AI search will not replace Google, because Google still handled 91.1% of the world’s searches in August 2026 and its own AI Overviews reach over 2 billion people a month. What AI search is replacing is the click, and that shift hits your store harder than any new search engine ever will.

Most AI Search Already Happens Inside Google

Most AI search already happens inside Google because AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of the same results page people have used for twenty years. Google held 91.1% of global search in August 2026, per Statcounter. Bing sat at 4.5%.

Beyond that, Google told investors in July 2025 that AI Overviews had passed 2 billion monthly users and AI Mode had passed 100 million. Every AI-first tool combined has not pushed Google under 90%. ChatGPT changed how a slice of people research, but the habit of typing a question into Google has barely moved.

Also, the AI features are feeding Google more searches, not fewer. Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews were driving over 10% more queries in the searches where they appear. People read the summary, then ask a follow-up in the same box.

So when a founder asks me if SEO is dead, I point at those numbers. Searches are not falling. They are growing, and Google is answering more of them itself.

The Click Is Shrinking, Not the Search

The click is shrinking, not the search, because AI answers satisfy people right on the results page. Pew Research found users clicked a result on just 8% of searches with an AI summary, against 15% without one.

It gets thinner from there. Only 1% of visits clicked a link inside the AI summary itself, and people ended their session entirely on 26% of pages with a summary, versus 16% without. Pew saw a summary on about one in five searches back in March 2025, and Google has expanded AI Overviews steadily since.

Every point of that expansion moves more of your keywords from click territory into answer territory, whether your rankings move or not. Your page can hold position one all year while the visits from it fall by half.

Play that out on your store. Someone searches “how to clean a wool rug” and your care guide used to win that click. Today the AI Overview answers it, cites you, and the shopper moves on.

Your guide did its job for the machine and got nothing back for the store. This is the same squeeze featured snippets started years ago, just bigger, and I walked through that history in AI Overviews vs featured snippets.

Judge Your Traffic by Revenue Per Visit

You should judge your traffic by revenue per visit because the visits AI search takes first are the ones that rarely bought anything. Machines now read your how-to content, while collection and product pages still earn clicks from people who intend to buy.

Even so, most founders still panic at a falling sessions chart. I covered the traffic side in does AI search kill organic traffic, and the short version holds: a store can lose 20% of its sessions, keep its buyers, and come out ahead on profit. Plan for fewer clicks per search, not fewer searches, and measure the clicks you keep by what they buy.

The shopper who does click through an AI answer already read the comparison. They arrive closer to the wallet. Before you rewrite anything, check which pages lost the visits and whether those visits ever converted in the first place.

So I sort the loss by page type before I judge it. I pull the top 50 landing pages from Search Console, tag each one as a how-to post, a comparison post, a collection page, or a product page, and lay revenue next to the sessions. The how-to posts almost always show the biggest drop and the smallest share of sales.

From there the panic usually fades. The chart was falling because the visits that never bought anything went away first. The pages that pay the bills are often flat or up.

The Same Work Wins Google and AI Answers

The same work wins Google and AI answers because every machine reads the same crawlable, quotable pages. Even ChatGPT search runs on ordinary web plumbing. OpenAI’s own help docs say it crawls with OAI-SearchBot and leans on third-party search providers.

Still, I get pitched a separate AI playbook every week, and I have not found one worth buying. The answer-first format that gets you into Google’s AI Overviews is the same one ChatGPT likes to quote. Write the direct answer in the first two sentences, then earn the depth below it.

From there, check the boring stuff twice. A store that loads fast and keeps crawlers unblocked gets read by everything. A store with brilliant content behind broken plumbing gets read by nothing. Most of the losers in AI search will lose on plumbing, not prose.

Beyond that, get your brand mentioned in the places AI reads. The engines lean on comparison posts, forum threads, and reviews when they decide which store to name in an answer. A store nobody else mentions rarely gets recommended, no matter how clean its own pages are.

Your Collection Pages Are the Moat

Your collection pages are the moat because they still earn clicks from people who intend to buy, and no AI summary can hand a shopper a cart. Someone searching “wool area rugs 8×10” wants to see rugs, prices, and shipping times, not a paragraph about wool.

Product pages sit right behind them. Shopping tools quote product pages directly, so clean data, clear specs, and real reviews decide whether your page gets pulled into the answer or skipped. A vague title or a missing dimension can cost you the mention, and the shopper never learns you existed.

So spend your next round of work there, not on another how-to post. Keep the guides you have, write them to be cited, and link each one to the products it mentions. Make your comparison content honest enough that the AI can quote it and your product still comes out ahead.

Want to Know How Exposed Your Store Is?

Google is not going anywhere, but the click economy underneath it is being repriced. The stores that win from here answer questions machines can quote, keep product pages worth clicking, and measure revenue instead of raw sessions.

If you want to see where your store sits, book a call. I’ll pull your Search Console and show you which pages AI answers are already eating and which ones are still earning buyers. My AI search services start with exactly that work.
