What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained
AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of formatting your content so search engines and AI tools can lift a direct answer from it. Instead of chasing ten blue links, you write so Google’s AI Overviews, featured snippets, and ChatGPT can quote your page as the answer.
What Counts as an Answer Engine?
An answer engine is any tool that answers the question itself instead of handing you a list of links, and AEO targets all of them. That includes Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and the voice assistants built on top of them.
Each engine picks sources a little differently. Google pulls from its index, while chat tools lean on search results plus training data, which is why it helps to know how ChatGPT picks which sites to cite before you chase it.
The scale is why this matters now. OpenAI reported 900 million weekly ChatGPT users in February 2026. On Google’s side, Semrush tracked AI Overviews appearing on 6.49% of keywords in January 2025 and peaking at 24.61% by that July.
Don’t forget the quieter surfaces either. The People Also Ask box, voice assistants reading answers out loud, and shopping tools comparing products all pull from the same well: pages that answer cleanly.
How Is AEO Different From SEO?
SEO earns you a spot on a results page. AEO earns you the quote inside the answer itself. Google’s own guidance says optimizing for its generative AI features “is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.”
That line comes straight from Google’s AI features optimization guide, and its companion page adds that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. If a page can rank and show a snippet, it is eligible.
That should change how you budget your effort. Every hour spent on fundamentals counts double now, because the same crawlable page and honest proof feed both the rankings and the answers.
I break down where the labels do and don’t matter in my post on SEO vs AEO vs GEO. The short version: the foundation is identical, and the last 10% is formatting. I also put the two newer acronyms head to head in GEO vs AEO.
Most of what gets sold as AEO is regular SEO with a new invoice. If a pitch treats them as separate projects with separate fees, ask what work is actually different, the same test I use in should you hire an AEO agency.
How to Do AEO in 5 Steps
1. Find the questions people actually ask
Start with Google’s autocomplete, the People Also Ask box, and your own customer emails. Semrush found that keywords triggering AI Overviews tend to be longer and more specific, so the awkward, wordy questions are the opportunity. Keep a running list and sort it by how close each question sits to a sale, because a sizing or shipping question earns its page faster than trivia does.
2. Answer in the first sentence
Put the direct answer in the first sentence under the heading, then explain. If a reader only saw that one sentence, they should still walk away answered.
Under “How long does shipping take?” the first sentence is “Standard shipping takes 3 to 5 business days,” not a story about your fulfillment partner.
3. Keep the answer snippet-sized
Aim for two or three sentences before you elaborate, and keep the quotable version under about 300 characters. Answer engines quote short passages, not essays, so the tight version has to stand on its own before the depth starts. This is the same shape I use to rank in Google AI Overviews, and it works because the engine can lift the answer without editing it.
4. Back it with numbers and first-hand proof
Google’s guide asks for unique, non-commodity content. A stat, a test result, or a real example gives an engine a reason to cite you instead of the other ten pages saying the same thing.
For a store this proof is cheap: your own order data, your own product tests, photos of the thing in use. Nobody else has it, which is the point.
5. Stay crawlable
Google states its generative AI models use publicly accessible, crawlable content, so a blocked or unindexed page is invisible no matter how good the writing is. Check robots.txt and the page’s status in Search Console before you blame the copy. If a crawler can’t read the page, no answer engine can cite it.
How Do You Know AEO Is Working?
You know AEO is working when impressions and citations show up where the answers live. Google added a generative AI performance view to Search Console, chat tools show up as referral traffic, and your brand starts appearing inside the answers your customers read.
Be honest about what winning looks like, though. Pew Research found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one. Fewer clicks reach every site, which makes being the cited source worth more, not less.
Watch branded search too. When an answer engine quotes you, some readers search your name afterward instead of clicking, and that lift shows up in Search Console within weeks.
Track citations and branded search, not just clicks. I walk through the new report in my guide to the AI performance report in Search Console, and it takes about ten minutes to set up a habit around it.
Want Answer Engines to Quote Your Store?
AEO is not a new discipline. It is answer-first writing on top of the SEO fundamentals you already need: real questions, direct answers, proof, and a crawlable site. The sites getting quoted are the ones that made quoting easy.
