Should You Hire an AEO Agency?
You should hire an AEO agency only if it treats answer engine optimization as part of SEO, not a separate project billed on top of it. Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO. Most stores get further paying one team for the fundamentals than paying two teams for the same page.
What Does an AEO Agency Actually Sell?
An AEO agency sells the work of getting your pages quoted by AI tools: question research, answer-first rewrites, crawlability fixes, and citation tracking. Every item on that list already lives inside a competent SEO engagement.
That is not a knock on the work itself. The work is real and most sites need it, as I lay out in my breakdown of what AEO covers. What I push back on is the framing that it needs a second team, because Google’s AI features guide states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
As for what you get, the typical package bundles an audit, a batch of rewritten pages, and a monthly visibility report. Those are fine deliverables. They are also the same three lines that sat in SEO proposals five years ago, before the acronym changed.
An AEO line item should replace SEO work, not sit on top of it. If you already pay for SEO, read the new proposal line by line and ask which of those items your current provider is missing before you sign with a second one.
When Does Hiring One Make Sense?
Hiring an AEO agency makes sense when AI answers already sit on your money queries and nobody is doing your SEO fundamentals well. If a page can’t rank or earn a snippet, no formatting trick will get it quoted.
The exposure is real but uneven. Semrush tracked AI Overviews on 6.49% of keywords in January 2025, a peak of 24.61% that July, and 15.69% by November. Search your own top queries and see what actually shows up before you budget anything.
There is also a capacity case. If your team can write but nobody owns search, an outside pair of hands can install the answer-first format faster than you would learn it from scratch. Just scope it as a project with an end date, not an open-ended retainer.
Clicks also thin out when answers appear. Pew Research found users clicked a regular result on 8% of visits with an AI summary present, versus 15% without one. That math favors being the quoted source, and paying for help can be worth it, at the kind of rates I cover in my post on what AEO costs.
Red Flags in an AEO Pitch
The red flags in an AEO pitch are the same ones Google already lists for SEO hires: guaranteed placements, secret methods, and pressure to sign before anyone explains the work.
- A guarantee that ChatGPT or Google will cite you. Google’s hiring guide says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and nobody controls an AI answer either.
- A proprietary tool or a claimed special relationship with an AI company.
- An AEO retainer stacked on an SEO retainer for the same pages.
- A pitch that talks about the trend for ten slides and your actual pages for none.
Guaranteed AI citations are the new guaranteed #1 rankings. The same skepticism applies whether you’re vetting a big shop or weighing an agency against a freelancer: ask what work happens, on which pages, and how you’ll see it.
From there, the cleanest test is to pick one page and ask exactly what they would change on it. A real practitioner answers in specifics on the spot, down to which sentence moves where. A packager changes the subject back to the trend, because the trend is the product.
What to Ask Before You Sign
Ask an AEO agency the same things Google suggests asking any SEO: for examples of brands they’ve made visible in AI answers, the changes they plan for your site, and how they’ll measure the result.
Measurement is the tell. Search Console now has a performance report for Google’s AI features, and chat referrals show up in analytics, so “AI visibility is hard to measure” is a 2024 excuse. If an agency can’t name the report it will measure with, keep interviewing.
Ask for a timeline too. Citations move faster than rankings on fresh topics and slower on crowded ones, so a serious answer sounds like a range with checkpoints, not a promise about next month.
One more filter: ask who does the writing. Answer-first rewrites in your brand’s voice take real hours, and a shop quoting fifty pages a month at a suspiciously low price is running your site through a template.
Want AI Visibility Without Paying Twice?
AEO agencies sell real work under a new label, and the label itself is harmless. Paying for the same work twice is not, and neither is a guarantee nobody can keep. Vet the pitch like Google says to vet an SEO, and most of the field sorts itself out in one call.
If you want a straight read first, book a call and I’ll pull your Search Console, show you which of your queries already trigger AI answers, and tell you whether you need an agency or an afternoon of edits.
