Citations vs Mentions: What’s the Difference?

Citations and mentions are the two ways your brand shows up in AI search, and they are not the same thing. A citation is a link to your page inside an AI answer. A mention is your brand named in the answer text itself, link or no link. They move differently, and you earn them differently.

Mixing the two up leads to the wrong work, so let me pull them apart.

Key Points

  • A citation links to your page as a source. A mention names your brand in the answer.
  • Citations come from retrieval: the AI searched, found your page, and quoted it.
  • Mentions come from reputation: the model has seen your brand across the web enough to name it.
  • Ahrefs found web mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.664, stronger than any other signal tested.

What Is a Citation in an AI Answer?

A citation in an AI answer is a source link. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overviews answer a question, they search the live web, read a set of pages, and attach links to the ones they used. If your URL sits in that source list, you got cited, and a shopper can click through.

Citations are a retrieval game. Google describes its AI features running query fan-out, where one question spawns multiple background searches. Your page gets cited when it wins one of those background searches, which is why indexable, well-ranked pages still collect most citations.

Citations are also spread thinner than people assume. An Omniscient Digital analysis of 23,387 citations found earned media took 48% of them, while brand-owned pages took just 23%. Even on branded queries, the AI quotes other people talking about you more than it quotes you.

What Is a Brand Mention in AI Search?

A brand mention in AI search is your name appearing in the answer itself. Ask ChatGPT for the best running socks and it might write “brands like Bombas and Darn Tough,” with no link near either name. Nobody clicked anything, but two brands just got recommended at the moment of decision.

Mentions run on the model’s accumulated picture of the web. Training data, plus whatever the retrieved pages say about your category, decide which names surface. That is why a brand with zero rankings can still get named, and a well-ranked brand can stay invisible.

For a Shopify store, mentions are the quiet revenue channel. A shopper who sees your name in three AI answers searches for you directly later. I dug into how that selection works in why ChatGPT recommends some brands and not others.

Why Do Citations and Mentions Move Differently?

Citations and mentions move differently because one reads your pages and the other reads your reputation. A citation can appear the week after you publish a genuinely useful page, because retrieval is live. A mention lags months behind, because it needs your name repeated across many sites the models trust and retrieve.

The correlation data backs this split. An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlated with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, roughly triple the 0.218 for backlinks. Brands in the top quartile for web mentions averaged 169 AI Overview appearances. The next quartile averaged 14.

Citations reward your best page. Mentions reward your whole footprint. That is the cleanest way I know to plan the work, and it is the same divide I unpack in brand mentions vs backlinks.

How Do You Earn More AI Citations?

You earn more AI citations by publishing pages an AI can safely quote. That means a direct answer in the first sentences under each heading, original numbers or firsthand testing, and clean crawl access so the retrieval step can even reach you. Blocked bots and thin pages get skipped.

Ranking still does heavy lifting here. Seer Interactive’s study of roughly 10,000 questions found brands on page one of Google showed a correlation near 0.65 with appearing in LLM answers. The retrieval layer leans on search results, so your classic SEO keeps paying.

Even so, one page with a stat nobody else has will out-cite ten generic guides. For product and collection pages, the checklist changes a bit, and I cover it in AI citations for ecommerce.

How Do You Earn More Brand Mentions?

You earn more brand mentions by getting named on pages you do not own. Reviews, comparison posts, Reddit threads, industry roundups, podcast show notes. Every one adds a vote toward the consensus the models read. Omniscient’s data showed that for “what do customers think” queries, 82% of citations went to earned media.

Honest concession: this is PR work wearing an SEO badge, and most SEOs, me included, spent years treating unlinked mentions as a consolation prize. The AI era flipped that. The mention is now the asset, and the link is the bonus.

Start where votes are cheap. Ask happy customers to review you on the platforms your niche trusts. Pitch two or three comparison-post authors per month. Show up usefully in community threads. Then watch your branded search, because rising mentions pull it up, and I show how to push that flywheel in increasing branded search for Shopify.

Want Both Citations and Mentions for Your Store?

Citations get your pages quoted. Mentions get your brand recommended. A store that only writes quotable pages stays a source, never a suggestion. A store that only chases buzz gets named but never clicked. You want the answer to cite your page and name your brand in the same breath.

I map this two-track plan for Shopify brands every month. If you want to know where your store stands in AI answers today, and which five moves would change it fastest, book a call and I’ll run your brand through the main AI engines live on the call. For anything bigger than a one-call fix, my Shopify AI search services are built for it.
