Do You Need an llms.txt File?

No, you do not need an llms.txt file, because the AI systems that send shoppers to your store do not read it. Google says it ignores the file, and Ahrefs found 97% of them got zero bot requests in a full month. Adding one takes about 20 minutes and cannot hurt, so the only real mistake is paying someone to do it.

No Major AI System Reads llms.txt

No major AI system reads llms.txt, because the crawler logs show almost nobody asking for the file. Ahrefs checked 137,000 domains and found that 97% of the llms.txt files on those sites got zero requests during May 2026. Only about 1% of the requests that did arrive came from AI retrieval bots like ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Even better, SEO audit tools made up 21% of those requests. The tools checking whether you have the file outnumber the AI systems using it. If a bot never asks for the file, the file cannot change what that bot says about your store.

Also, you can run this check on your own store. If your site sits behind Cloudflare or any tool that logs requests by user agent, search the last 30 days for llms.txt and see who asked. Odds are the list is short, and most of it is audit software, not ChatGPT.

Google says the same thing. John Mueller called llms.txt “purely speculative for now” and said he would create one when an AI platform that sends you customers asks for it. None has, and ChatGPT finds pages through search indexes instead, which I break down in my post on how ChatGPT picks its sources.

Adding One Is a Cheap Bet, Not a Strategy

Adding an llms.txt file is a cheap bet, not a strategy, because it takes about 20 minutes and cannot hurt your rankings. If the standard ever catches on, you are already done. Treat it like a lottery ticket that costs 20 minutes, not like an AI search plan.

If you take the bet, keep it small. Write a markdown file with your store name, one line on what you sell, and links to your main collections, your best product pages, and your shipping and returns policies. On Shopify you usually need a small app or a redirect to serve a file at the root, and that setup is most of the 20 minutes.

Just know the one real exception is developer documentation. AI coding assistants sometimes load those files while writing code, and OpenAI keeps one for its own developer docs. Your Shopify store is not a docs site, and no shopper is prompting an AI with your API.

Beyond that, the file that deserves your attention is robots.txt, because blocking AI crawlers by accident removes your store from AI answers completely. OpenAI’s crawler docs point to robots.txt, not llms.txt, as the way its bots decide what they can read.

Never Pay Anyone to Optimize It

You should never pay anyone to optimize an llms.txt file, because there is nothing to optimize when no bot reads it. The file now shows up in almost every AEO and GEO service package I review, usually priced like it does something. The proposal itself is fine, but the sales pitch built on top of it is not.

The problem is how it shows up on the proposal. Line one is llms.txt creation and optimization, line two is AI readiness, line three is entity work, and each one carries a price. Ask one question before you sign: which AI bot requested that file last month? If they cannot show you a log, you have your answer.

Still, plenty of smart SEOs disagree with me and treat early adoption as cheap insurance. Fair enough. Cheap insurance should cost you 20 minutes, not a line item on an agency invoice.

Brand Mentions Get You Cited, Not Text Files

Brand mentions get your store cited far more than any text file, because models learn who you are from what the rest of the web says about you. In a 75,000-brand study, branded web mentions predicted AI visibility about three times more strongly than backlinks did. Reviews, forum threads, gift guides, and press all count.

But mentions do not come from a file you upload. For a store they come from a gift guide that lists your product, a Reddit thread where a customer names you, a review site with your brand on it, and a local paper that covers your launch. Each one teaches the model your store exists and what it is known for.

So start with access, since about 5.9% of sites block OpenAI’s GPTBot, often without knowing it. Then fix structure, because models read your page like an outline and want the direct answer in the first lines under each heading. Ahrefs reviewed the research on LLM visibility, and every strong signal lives on the open web, not in a special file.

From there, keep pages fresh, since one analysis of 17 million citations found AI assistants cite content roughly 26% fresher than what organic search returns. Spend your AI search hours earning mentions, not formatting text files. I walk through the full playbook in my guide to ranking in ChatGPT.

The File Itself Is Just a Menu for Robots

The file itself is just a menu for robots, because the proposal asks you to hand AI models a clean markdown map of your site at yourdomain.com/llms.txt instead of making them parse your full pages. Jeremy Howard proposed the standard in 2024. The pitch is that web pages are messy for machines, so you give the model a tidy text version instead.

That pitch holds up on paper. LLMs work with limited context windows, which is the amount of text a model can hold in its head at once. A curated file would save the model from digging through your theme code, popups, and cookie banners to find your product copy.

The problem is that no shopper-facing AI system took the menu. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google all read the dining room instead, meaning your actual pages, which is why the fixes that work are page fixes.

Want Your Store Cited in AI Answers?

Skip llms.txt or spend 20 minutes on it, either choice is fine. Then put your real effort into crawlable pages, direct answers, and brand mentions, because that is what the data says LLMs reward.

If you want a second set of eyes, book a call and I will tell you which of those three is holding your store back and what I would fix first. If you want the ongoing work handled, that is what my AI search services are for.
