AI Overviews vs Featured Snippets
AI Overviews and featured snippets differ in who writes the answer: a featured snippet lifts one answer from one page and credits that page alone, while an AI Overview writes a new answer from many pages, then links a few of them as sources. The habits that won snippets still win AI citations.
What Is the Difference Between AI Overviews and Featured Snippets?
The difference between AI Overviews and featured snippets is who writes the text: Google quotes one page for a snippet, and Gemini writes the AI Overview itself. A snippet is an excerpt Google pulls word for word from one ranking page. An AI Overview is a paragraph Gemini writes itself, stitched together from several pages, with source links tucked beside the text.
That authorship change matters for your store. With a snippet, you own the whole box. Your words, your link, position zero. With an AI Overview, you share the box with five to ten other sources, and the shopper may never notice whose link is whose.
Google’s own docs confirm you cannot mark up a page to force either one. Featured snippets are picked automatically by Google’s systems, and Google says there are no special optimizations for AI Overviews beyond normal indexing and quality work.
How Often Do AI Overviews and Featured Snippets Appear Together?
AI Overviews and featured snippets appear together on anywhere from 7% to over 50% of AI Overview results, depending on the study, because the data is messy. An Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords found featured snippets on over half of AI Overview results. An Advanced Web Ranking study of 8,000 keywords put the co-occurrence at just 7.42%.
Why the gap? Different keyword sets. Ahrefs sampled long-tail informational queries, where both features thrive. AWR sampled across 16 industries, including ecommerce, where the two features almost never share a page. In AWR’s data, snippets and AI Overviews showed together on only 0.4% of ecommerce queries, versus 34.9% in health.
The trend line matters too. Semrush’s study of 10 million keywords found AI Overviews grew from 6.49% of queries in January 2025 to a 24.61% peak in July, then settled near 15.69% by November. Their refresh also found snippets now co-occur with AI Overviews less than they did in early 2025. Google is slowly letting the new box eat the old one. Do Snippet Optimization Habits Still Work in AI Overviews?
Snippet optimization habits still work in AI Overviews, and the citation data proves it. That carryover is the whole reason people ask whether AEO is just featured snippets rebranded. Research Ahrefs cites found that at least one top-10 organic result appeared in AI Overview sources 99.5% of the time. The pages that won snippets by ranking well and answering fast are the same pages getting cited now.
The playbook barely changed. Put the question in an H2. Answer it completely in the first two or three sentences under that heading. Keep the answer self-contained, so it makes sense with zero surrounding context. That format made snippets easy for Google to extract. It makes passages easy for Gemini to quote, too.
Write every section so the first paragraph could stand alone as the answer. That one habit fed my clients’ snippets for years, and it feeds their AI citations now. I break down the full process in my guide to ranking in AI Overviews.
Which One Should Your Shopify Store Chase in 2026?
Your Shopify store should chase both, but weight them by query type. Ahrefs found 99.2% of AI Overview queries are informational. Product and collection queries still mostly show classic results, shopping units, and the occasional snippet. So your blog fights in AI Overview territory while your money pages mostly do not.
That split shapes the work. Blog content gets the question-heading, answer-first treatment because it can earn citations. Product pages get clean specs, reviews, and schema because AI shopping surfaces read structure, not prose. I cover the product side in my post on getting Shopify products into AI Overviews.
Chase snippets on queries where no AI Overview shows, and citations where one does. Most SEOs will tell you snippet chasing is dead. I half agree. The snippet box itself is shrinking, but the writing style it trained us into is the most durable skill in AI search.
How Do You Measure Wins From Each?
You measure snippet wins and AI Overview wins differently, and that trips people up. Snippets show in Search Console as position 1 with unusual click patterns. AI Overview citations are blended into normal web search totals, so a citation looks like any other impression in your reports.
Practical read: if impressions climb while average position holds and clicks sag on informational pages, an AI Overview is probably answering above you. Spot checks help. Search your key questions in an incognito window and note who gets cited.
Track impressions per query, not just clicks, or you will miss every citation you earn. I built a workaround report for this, and I share the setup in my guide to the GSC AI performance report.
Want Your Store Cited in AI Answers?
Featured snippets and AI Overviews run on the same fuel: clear answers on pages Google already trusts. The box changed shape. The work underneath mostly did not, and stores that built snippet habits early are collecting citations now.
I audit Shopify stores for AI search visibility every week. If you want to know which of your pages can earn citations in the next 90 days and which queries are already lost to the AI box, book a call and I’ll walk your SERPs with you, query by query.
