5 Steps to Rank in Google Gemini in 2026

You rank in Google Gemini by ranking in Google first, then making each page easy to quote. Gemini builds its answers from Google’s own index, and Ahrefs found 76% of AI Overview citations come from pages in the top 10. For best results, add complete product data and mentions on YouTube and Reddit.

Short answer: get indexed, rank on page one, open every section with the answer, complete your product feed, and earn mentions on the sites Gemini already reads.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Google Search Console access for your store, so you can check indexing and see clicks from Google’s AI features.
  • A look at your robots.txt file, which sits at yourstore.com/robots.txt.
  • Google Merchant Center, connected through Shopify’s Google & YouTube app if you sell products.
  • A list of the 10 to 20 questions your shoppers ask before they buy.

All four are things you already own or can set up in an afternoon. The steps below use them in order, and each one builds on the step before it.

Where Gemini Answers Show Up

Gemini answers show up in three places, and all three read from Google’s index. ChatGPT works differently, and I cover whether ranking in Google helps you show up in ChatGPT in its own post. The Gemini app is the chat product. AI Overviews are the summaries at the top of a normal search, and AI Mode is the full chat tab inside Google Search.

SurfaceWhere shoppers see itWhat it pulls from
AI OverviewsTop of a regular Google searchPages Google has indexed, mostly from page one
AI ModeIts own tab in Google SearchIndexed pages plus Google’s product listings

Because all three share one index, you do not need three plans. The five steps below work on every surface, and the few differences between them come up in Step 1 and in the troubleshooting section at the end.

Step 1: Get Every Page Indexed and Snippet-Ready

Getting every page indexed and snippet-ready comes first, since Gemini can only quote what Google has in its index. Google’s AI features guide says a page must be “indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet” and that there are “no additional requirements” beyond that.

To check, open Search Console and run URL Inspection on your 20 most important pages. You want to see “Page is indexed” on each one. A noindex tag, a canonical pointing at a different URL, or a robots.txt block will keep a page out of Google and out of every Gemini answer with it.

On a Shopify store, the usual problems are filtered collection URLs, thin tag pages, and products that were set to hidden and never switched back. Fix the pages you want quoted, and leave the filter URLs alone.

Once indexing is clean, look at your snippet settings. That same guide lists nosnippet, data-nosnippet, and max-snippet as the controls that limit what Google’s AI features can show. Some SEO apps add those tags without telling you, so view the source on a product page and search for “nosnippet” before you move on.

Just know that Google-Extended works differently than most guides claim. Google’s crawler documentation says it “does not impact a site’s inclusion in Google Search,” so blocking it does not pull you from AI Overviews or AI Mode. It does stop your content from grounding answers in the Gemini app.

So leave Google-Extended allowed unless you want out of the Gemini app. For a store, there is no good reason to want that.

Step 2: Rank on Page One for the Question

Ranking on page one for the question is the biggest lever you have. Ahrefs looked at 1.9 million citations from 1 million AI Overviews and found 76.1% of cited pages rank in the top 10. Only 14.4% of cited pages did not rank at all.

That number means the old work still counts. Titles, internal links, and pages built around one clear topic decide whether you are in the pool Gemini draws from. Most of what I cover in my steps to rank in Google AI Overviews applies here, since AI Overviews are Gemini answers inside the search results.

On top of that, Gemini does not run your shopper’s question as one search. Google calls the method “query fan-out,” which it describes as “issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources.” A question like “best standing desk for a small office” fans out into searches about size, price, weight limit, and assembly.

A page that answers several of those sub-questions can be pulled for more than one of them. So take your list of 10 to 20 shopper questions and match each to the page that should answer it, then sort the pages by where they rank today:

Where the page ranksWhat to do next
Top 10Rewrite the opening of each section (Step 3)
Positions 11 to 20Improve the page and point more internal links at it
Not rankingWrite the page, or rebuild the one you have
Not indexedGo back to Step 1

Whichever group is biggest, start with the pages in positions 11 to 20. They are the closest to the top 10, and a small lift moves them into the range Gemini cites most.

For those pages, internal links are the cheapest lift. Link to each one from a related collection and from two blog posts, with anchor text that names the topic. On Shopify that is a ten-minute edit per page, and it tells Google which page you want ranked for the question.

Step 3: Open Every Section With the Answer

Opening every section with the answer is what turns a ranking page into a quoted one. Gemini lifts short passages that make sense on their own, so a heading phrased as the shopper’s question and a two-sentence answer under it give it something clean to pull.

In practice, the fix is an edit to the first 40 to 60 words under each heading. Most pages warm up before they answer, and the warm-up is what gets skipped:

“When it comes to choosing a mattress for back pain, there are many factors to consider.”

“A medium-firm mattress is the best choice for most people with back pain, since it keeps the spine level without pressure on the hips.”

The first line could sit on any page about anything. The second names the product type, commits to an answer, and gives the reason, which is everything a quoted passage needs.

The same rule applies to numbers. A claim with a figure and a named source behind it reads as something worth repeating, and a claim without one reads as an opinion. Put the price, the size, the weight limit, or the study in the opening, not three paragraphs down.

After you rewrite a section, run one test on it. Copy the section into a blank document and read it cold. If it needs the paragraph above it to make sense, rewrite it until it stands alone.

You can also skip the extras people sell for this step. Google’s guide says you “don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup” to appear in its AI features, so an llms.txt file will not do what a better opening does. Write the two sentences you would want Gemini to read out loud.

Step 4: Complete Your Product Data

Completing your product data is how your products, and not only your articles, show up in Gemini. Shopping answers in AI Mode and the Gemini app pull from Google’s product listings. Merchant Center’s product data specification sets the fields every listing must have.

On Shopify, the Google & YouTube app sends your catalog to Merchant Center for you. The sync only passes along what you filled in, so a product with no brand, a vague title, or a missing barcode arrives thin. Open Merchant Center, sort by disapproved and limited products, and clear that list first.

FieldRequired by Google?What to check
TitleYesNames the product type, not just your model name
DescriptionYesAnswers the top question shoppers ask about it
Price and availabilityYesMatch what the product page shows right now
Image linkYesA clean main image with no text overlay
Brand and GTINFor most productsFilled in on every product that has them

Of those rows, the title is the one I fix most often. Nobody asks Gemini for a “RIO 5.0.” They ask for a split king adjustable base, and a title that leads with the model name gives Google nothing to match.

With the feed clean, the rest of the shopping setup gets easier. I cover checkout inside AI Mode and what it changes in Google AI Mode for Shopify stores. Feed cleanup is also the first thing I check in my AI search services for Shopify stores, since a disapproved product cannot be recommended by anyone.

Step 5: Earn Mentions Where Gemini Already Looks

Earning mentions where Gemini already looks is the step that gets your brand named, not just your page linked. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and found YouTube mentions correlated with AI Mode visibility at 0.740, the strongest factor it measured. Domain Rating sat at 0.285.

The citation data points the same way. Semrush tracked over 100 million AI citations across 13 weeks and found LinkedIn in about 15% of AI Mode responses, with Reddit, YouTube, and Google’s own properties close behind. Wikipedia showed up in about 2%.

So the places to be mentioned are the places Google already owns or trusts. On YouTube, that means product demos and comparisons with titles and descriptions written the way shoppers search. On Reddit, it means answering questions in your category with what you know, not with a pitch.

Roundups matter here too. When a “best of” article in your category ranks on page one, Gemini reads it for the same question your shoppers ask, so a spot on that list is a mention in the answer’s source material. Pitch the writers of the three roundups that already rank for your main product type.

You don’t need every platform. Pick two platforms and show up every week. A founder who answers Reddit threads weekly and posts one useful video a month will usually earn more mentions than a brand that publishes four blog posts and nothing else.

Even so, the source mix is not the same for every AI tool. Gemini leans on Google’s own properties far more than ChatGPT does, and I compare the two in ChatGPT vs Gemini for SEO so you can decide where your hours go.

What to Do If Gemini Still Skips You

If Gemini still skips you after the five steps, check your tracking before you change anything else. AI answers shift from one run to the next, so a single missing citation proves nothing. Log your 10 to 20 questions weekly for a month, then act on the pattern.

How do you track Gemini citations?

Run each question three ways: in Google with AI Overviews, in AI Mode, and in the Gemini app. Google’s help page for sources in Gemini Apps says a Sources button appears “at the bottom of the response or in-line,” and that panel lists the pages it used. Write down which brands are named and which pages are linked.

For the traffic side, Search Console counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the regular Performance report. Visits from the Gemini app show up as referrals, and my guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 shows how to group them.

What if you rank on page one and are still not cited?

Look at the opening of the section that should answer the question. A page-one ranking gets you into the pool, and the passage decides whether you get picked. Compare your first two sentences to the ones Gemini quoted, and rewrite yours to be shorter and more specific.

What if a competitor is named and you are not?

Open the Sources panel on that answer and list the pages behind it. Those pages are your outreach list. If three of them are roundups and one is a YouTube review, the gap is mentions, and Step 5 is where your next month goes.

What if AI Overviews cite you and the Gemini app does not?

Check robots.txt for a Google-Extended block first, since that is the one setting that separates the Gemini app from Search. If nothing is blocked, the gap is usually the question itself. People type short searches into Google and long, specific requests into the app, so test the longer version and see which page answers it.

Get Your Store Ready for Gemini

Ranking in Google Gemini is ranking in Google with a few extra habits. A few moves this week will tell you where you stand:

  • Run URL Inspection on your top 20 pages and fix anything that is not indexed.
  • Rewrite the section openings on every page that already ranks in the top 10.
  • Clear the disapproved products in Merchant Center.
  • Book a call and I’ll run your top buying questions through Gemini and show you which answers your store is missing. If you want the work handled, my AI search services cover all five steps.
